About the position

A fixed-term 100% position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a PhD Research Fellow in biomedical analyses, which includes nuclear medicine, molecular medicine, chromatography and bioinformatics affiliated to the Department of Natural Sciences, for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension in connection with institutional services, such as teaching. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand including research periods at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)/St. Olav’s Hospital, Trondheim. The starting date is negotiable.

The Department of Natural Sciences employs around 70 people including professors, associated researchers, postdocs, and PhD fellows. The department offers PhD education in Coastal Ecology, Limnology, Molecular Ecology, and Terrestrial Ecology. The department has a B.Sc.-study program in medical laboratory sciences and in biology, as well as a master program in coastal ecology. Research is carried out in marine biology and ecology, chemistry, physics, and medical laboratory sciences. A stronghold is population ecology including bioinformatics. The department also conducts research in natural science didactics. The natural history museum of the university is also part of the department.

Responsibilities

The main aim of the project is to study effects of various radioactive nuclides on both cancer cell lines and in animal models, which includes several science-based disciplines:

Molecular medicine develops techniques to diagnose and treat diseases by understanding of genes and proteins, and constitutes the initial part of the project, using cell culture experiments (in vitro). Later, preclinical studies (in vivo) must be performed in collaboration with NTNU/St. Olav’s Hospital, Trondheim.

Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that use radioactive tracers to assess bodily functions and to diagnose and treat diseases. By using special detection equipment, different radioactive substances will be traced in single cells and in preclinical experiments to see where and when they accumulate.

Chromatography is a technique used to separate proteins, nucleic acids, or small molecules in complex mixtures. This analytical chemistry technique combine physical separation capabilities together mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and will be an important part of the analyses in the PhD project.

Bioinformatics is a scientific subdiscipline that involves computer technology to collect, store, analyze and disseminate large biological data and information. This field is rapidly growing within diagnostics and therapy for precision medicine. The project will include international research cooperation. Locally and nationally, it will include cooperation with neighboring disciplines at the university, in parallel with research at UiA/Sørlandets Sykehus (SSHF), Kristiansand, and St. Olav’s Hospital, Trondheim.

The project’s main topic is highly complex and cross-disciplinary, calling for knowledge from many areas of the biomedical, radiochemical and biological sciences.

Altogether, the project will have important clinical relevance.

A final, detailed description of the PhD project will be developed in collaboration with the candidate and will depend on the candidate’s skills, experiences, and interests.

Required qualifications

• Master’s degree in molecular medicine, bioinformatics, biophysics, biomedical sciences, or related sciences.
• The candidate should have a broad wet-lab experimental experience, and documented experience in some of the relevant techniques: experience with radioactive isotopes, HPLC, mass spectroscopy, fluorescence microscopy, bioinformatic, immunohistochemistry, western blot, isolation and analyses of DNA, RNA and proteins from tissue and blood.
• You should be willing to work with laboratory animals and thus willing to obtain the FELASA license.
• Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master’s level. You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master’s degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to USAs grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are suitable for a PhD education.
• You must be proficient in spoken and written English. International candidates that are not exempt from the English language requirements pursuant to the guidelines of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) must document this through one of the following tests with the stated results or better:
  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum score of 600 for the Paper based Test (PBT), or 92 for the Internet-based Test (iBT).
  • IELTS – International English Language Testing System, with the result of 6.5.

A prerequisite for employment is that the candidate is to be admitted to UiA’s PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Specialization in Natural Sciences within three months of appointment.

Desired qualifications

• Experience in cell culture work.
• Skilled in using confocal, fluorescence- and light microscopy.
• Experience in handling radioactive tracers.
• Experience in molecular medicine and preparing samples for sequencing.
• Knowledge in preparing and running samples for high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectroscopy (MS).
• Knowledge or interest in learning bioinformatics.
• Experience in handling large amount of data and statistical analyses.
• Ability to speak and write in one Scandinavian language counts as an advantage in the selection of candidate

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017 PhD Research Fellow, NOK 501.200 gross salary per year. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
