• Title of project: MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS AT TEMPERATURES CLOSE TO THEIR MELTING POINT

• Description: Current design is done under the
  assumption that in operation the airframe is in the elastic regime.
  However, during high-speed flight, the material will be subject to
  extreme environments which lead to dramatic reductions in its yield
  limit and strength. The objective of this project is to investigate the
  quasi-static and dynamic response of metallic materials at elevated
  temperatures. For this purpose, a new quasi-static loading capability
  with elevated temperature capabilities will be established while the
  dynamic material response under elevated temperatures will be
  investigated by developing a cutting edge new testing capability. These
  new capabilities will provide high resolution validation data for
  development of a predictive computational capability for
  high-temperatures and high-strain-rate applications, and thus fill a
  technology gap that currently exists for metallic materials in general.
  The student will work in the REEF solids mechanics group in Shalimar, on
  the Emerald Coast.

• Knowledge and skills needed: The candidate should
  have a strong mechanics background and interest in doing experimental
  work. Proficiency with Matlab is highly desired.
