Job description
Do you want to participate in a world-renowned team in genetics and horticulture science as a PhD researcher at Wageningen University? Are you a connecting person who collaborates with researchers and breeders on innovative solutions in an ambitious research program?
Our research aims at understanding how plants respond to changes in abiotic conditions affecting plant product quality. Following measures to mitigate climate change growers have adopted alternative growth strategies, which might not be optimal for existing current cultivars.
An intriguing scientific and practical problem in modern horticulture relates to plants grown at high humidity, a consequence of closing windows in greenhouses to reduce energy loss. In leaves of such plants stomatal guard cells frequently become unresponsive to external cues and fail to close when appropriate. This phenomenon is referred to as stomatal malfunction and leads to reduced postharvest keeping quality due to increased water loss. However, the mechanisms leading to stomatal malfunction and the genetic variation causal for intraspecific differences in tolerance towards high humidity are unknown.
In this project we will make use of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and the ornamental species Chrysanthemum to identify the mechanism and genetic variation causal for stomatal malfunction after long exposure to high humidity. For this, we will make use of a combination of high throughput phenotyping, physiological measurements, genetic mapping, and genomic analyses.
The project is a collaboration between the Plant Science Groups ‘Horticulture and Product Physiology’ and ‘Genetics’, and industry partners for which we will hire two PhD students and a technician. This vacancy is targeted at applicants for the PhD position at Horticulture and Product Physiology’, focusing on the molecular, cellular, and physiological aspects of stomatal malfunctioning in the ornamental plant Chrysanthemum.
