There is a vacancy for PhD position at the Department of Biological and Medical Psychology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years
About the project/work tasks:
The appointment as PhD candidate will be made on the basis of previous education and former scientific work, as well as quality and relevance of idea and plans for the research projects.
Please note that the project must be designed and developed in collaboration with the relevant research group. To be able to apply for the position, you must first contact a potential supervisor or research group and develop a project description. Alternatively, you can contact the Head of Department/Deputy who will then guide you to a relevant research group/supervisor.
To be considered for the position you must hold a relevant master’s degree or the equivalent (Norwegian or international) in MNT (Mathematics, science and technology in a broad sense). This may for example include a master’s in neuroscience, psychology or speech therapy, but other degrees may also be relevant. Applications with a research project that can be linked to a theme within the MNT initiative will be prioritized. The connection to the MNT initiative should be made explicit in the application.
The project must qualify the candidate for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Psychology. The PhD candidate will also be affiliated with The International Graduate School in Integrated Neuroscience (IGSIN)
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a master’s degree in the field of MNT (mathematics, science and technology in a broad sense).
- For admission to the doctoral program, grade B or above is normally required from the master’s thesis.
- Be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and cooperate well with others
- Proficiency in both written and oral English Good command of the Norwegian language
- Personal qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates
- Preference will be given to applicants who are able to provide strong evidence of existing research skills and/or knowledge relevant to the project topic, via the master’s thesis, and/or via other prior research/publications
About the PhD position:
The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises required duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a recruitment position.
About the research training: As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within a period of period of 3 years. When your qualification for the position is evaluated, you will also be evaluated for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Psychology. Your application must include:
- A brief account of the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position and CV
- A project description (maximum 10 pages incl. references). Please include area of research, research problems/questions, methods and selection of theory and methodology (design, empirical basis and analysis); planned scientific work and format for the dissertation (research articles or monograph). The project must be feasible within the time and resource frame of the position. The project description should include a literature review that demonstrates that the applicant is familiar with the field and can draw reasonable conclusions from prior research. The project description should describe ethical issues related to the research, including personal data privacy, duty to report, etc. If it is relevant to apply to REK or seek advice from UiB’s data protection officer/Norwegian Centre for Research Data, the applicant should mention that they have applied or plan to apply.
- Affirmation from the leader of the research group and PhD supervisor
- The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be the main advisor for the master’s thesis or equivalent thesis
- Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
- Applicants with foreign education must enclose certified translations to English or Scandinavian if the original Diploma and grade transcripts are not already in one of these languages. The applicants must also enclose a confirmation from NOKUT that the education is recognized to be in accordance with the Norwegian master’s degree. The review from NOKUT may take some time and the application should be sent to NOKUT as soon as you have decided to apply for the position. If you have not received an answer by the application deadline, please enclose documentation from NOKUT that they have received your application. Some qualifications from the Nordic countries are automatically recognized, please check NOKUT .
