PhD Position in Logistics – Simulation Modelling for Multi-Dimensional Construction Projects

Published Deadline Location
today 10 Nov Enschede

Job description
Many bridges and quays in historic city centres, such as in Amsterdam, show signs of overdue maintenance and have reached the end of their functional life. Renovation or renewal at an accelerated pace is needed to keep cities safe, accessible and livable. This is a large, costly and difficult task, with substantial impact on residents, traffic and businesses. Furthermore, the original bridges and quay walls are cultural heritage that must be preserved. Finally, construction works need to embed environmentally sustainable and circular approaches.
The Loqiquay project seeks to speed up renovation projects, developing logistics- and project control techniques, improving sustainability through closed-loop material cycles, and as a result reducing transport movements, damage to urban infrastructure, hindrance and emissions. To reach this goal, you will contribute to building a simulation model (Digital Twin) for joint logistics and project planning. It is important that logistical priorities and -decisions dynamically take into account the interests of involved partners. The envisioned key results include a multi-dimensional (i.e., multiple actors, criteria, transport modes, and projects) simulation environment, methods for coordinated project portfolio management, and designs for interactive decision-making driven by a common value framework (representing the desires of all stakeholders).
Can you help us to develop innovative solutions that improve live in urban areas? If you like working with diverse partners and also enjoy building simulation environments, you are the right fit for this position!
This position is embedded in the section Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS) of the High-tech Business and Entrepreneurship (HBE) department at the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS) at the University of Twente (UT). Within the Logiquay project, we collaborate with other research institutes (including TNO, Hogeschool van Amsterdam and TU Delft, hosting 2 PhD candidates and a postdoctoral researcher). Candidates are expected to spend 1 day per week at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam, building direct connections with the project partners and enabling close observation of real-world renovation activities.
