About the position

We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic and experimentally inclined PhD candidate to work in hybrid microstructures between superalloys and coatings produced by additive manufacturing for high temperature applications, for instance aero-engines. The position is in the Physical Metallurgy group  , at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Norwegian University for Science and Technology (NTNU).

This academic position will provide the opportunity for the candidate to complete a doctoral education program and obtain a PhD from NTNU, while undertaking professional development activities within the broad fields of research and materials science.

The project is motivated by the need to enable greener aero-engines. Aviation contributes greatly to the climate crisis and is one of the fastest-growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This research project aims to enable technological processing and material breakthroughs for advanced high-performance metallic materials, which can withstand higher operational temperatures while maintaining structural integrity for aero-engine applications. Hybrid fusion zone microstructures between superalloys and coatings can pave the way towards these required breakthroughs, by achieving advanced properties, such as oxidation. As a PhD candidate you will work on the novel research of hybrid microstructures, which is enabled by the current developments in additive manufacturing.

You will report to Associate Professor Paraskevas Kontis. Professor Randi Holmestad (NTNU) and Lecturer Dr. Katerina Christofidou (University of Sheffield, UK) will be co-supervisors. The PhD position is funded by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
