PhD position in experimental quantum simulation with ultracold atoms

The ICFO ultracold atoms group (www.qge.icfo.es; www.icfo.eu) is looking for well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic PhD candidates in experimental quantum simulation/computing with neutral atoms.

Quantum simulation (aka specific purpose quantum computing) is among the most developed quantum technologies. Experiments with neutral atoms already allow one to simulate the behavior of complex physical systems in regimes that are difficult to access with classical supercomputers. This has recently prompted the creation of atom quantum computing companies (Pasqal, AtomComputing, QuERA). From the fundamental physics point of view, ultracold atoms allow realizing in a clean and highly controllable manner fundamental models of physics that effectively describe nature, and provide an excellent platform to experimentally investigate quantum many-body physics.

In the ultracold quantum gases group at ICFO, we have three labs dedicated to quantum simulation with neutral atoms:

* Potassium mixtures: we explore models in the continuum, with the aim of simulating new quantum phases of matter (quantum liquids, supersolids), gauge theories, and topological superconductors.

* Quantum gas microscope for strontium atoms in optical lattices: our goal is to perform extended Hubbard models, which describe magnetic phases and toy models of high Tc superconductivity, with the ability to detect and manipulate every single atom.

* Rydberg atom arrays: in this new project, our goal is to realize highly controllable spin models for quantum computing of high-energy and condensed matter physics problems.

We are looking for PhD candidates in the three projects. We offer the possibility to join an exciting and rapidly expanding field of research, and to conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of fundamental quantum science and technology. All projects are designed and carried out in a small team of 3-4 people per laboratory, which will allow you to learn simultaneously a broad number of experimental techniques (vacuum, lasers, optics, electronics) and to expand your knowledge of quantum mechanics. We offer excellent working conditions, a rich environment for scientific collaborations, and competitive salaries.

Interested candidates should have an outstanding academic background and a solid knowledge of advanced quantum mechanics, statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum optics. Previous experimental experience in optics and lasers is valuable, but motivation to work in a team and learn new concepts and tecniques is as important. To apply, please send a CV, your academic transcripts, a copy of your bachelor or master thesis, and the name of two references to Prof. Leticia Tarruell (leticia.tarruell@icfo.eu).
