PhD-position on early breast cancer progression
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Center for Biomarkers CCBIO, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of four (4) years or max 4 months after completed the PhD-degree, if this is achieved within a shorter time than four years. The positions include 25 % required duties such as teaching, exam work or supervision, depending on the demands at CCBIO and the department.
The position is part of the project “EvoMaps – Understanding Early Breast Cancer Evolution in Space and Time”, funded by the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is considered a premalignant lesion. However, only few DCIS lesions have the potential to progress to invasive breast cancer. Since underlying evolutionary processes are largely unknown, the clinical prediction of DCIS progression remains difficult. The PhD project aims to elucidate regulatory mechanisms of early breast cancer evolution and progression in its microenvironmental tissue context. Therefore, the PhD student will apply state-of the art tissue-based analyses in order to identify and describe cellular ecosystems, where interactions between tumor cells and their adjacent microenvironment drive clonal expansion and disease progression during early tumor stages. In the long-term perspective, the study will set the basis to uncover novel therapeutic opportunities as well as clinically relevant treatment stratification models for early breast cancer patients.
We are looking for a curious and enthusiastic PhD student, with a great interest molecular pathology. The PhD project will involve spatial in situ techniques such as imaging mass cytometry (Hyperion), in situ sequencing and proximity ligation assay for comprehensive signaling-profiling of the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, RNA sequencing and mutation profiling as well as proteomic analyses of clinical samples will be conducted on a regular basis. A central aspect of the doctoral studies will be to learn how to set and discuss the generated data in a broader context. Additional tasks might include complementary functional in vitro studies using primary tissue samples.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is required that the applicant enclose a review from NOKUT whether the education in question (bachelor and master’s degree) is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree. Please see www.nokut.no/en for more information about NOKUT’s general recognition. The review from NOKUT may take some time and the application should be sent to NOKUT as soon as you have decided to apply for the position. If no answer within the application deadline, you must enclose documentation from NOKUT that they have received your application.
