PhD Position Analysing barriers and opportunities for farmers to adopt integrated pest management strategies’


We are looking for

Are you a talented aspiring researcher who is interested in economics and behaviour? Do you want to understand how farmers manage their business and predict their adoption of new strategies for ensuring yields or controlling pests? 

We invite applications for the PhD position entitled:‘‘Identifying barriers and opportunities for farmers to adopt integrated pest management (IPM) strategies’’.This research will be carried out within the HORIZON financed project entitled ‘Supporting UPtake Integrated Pest Management and lOw-Risk pesTicide Use (SUPPORT)’.

The overall project’s objective is ‘to pave the way for the adoption of IPM tools and technologies by
development of relevant and actionable scientific knowledge […]’.

In this PhD project, you will contribute to this objective by integrated analyses of pesticide use and IPM adoption. Data on pesticide use is available in the form of financial, technical and environmental farm indicators from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) or Farm Accountancy Sustainability Network (pilot FSDN). Data on IPM adoption will be collected at a European level and includes a choice experiment among farmers.

The prospective candidate will work in an interdisciplinary setting, combining economic and behavioural sciences with agronomy and agricultural studies on the use of IPM strategies.

Specific objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • develop a survey, that includes a discrete choice experiment, for the data collection on IPM adoption with farmers participating in the FADN/FSDN network;
  • conduct economic analyses on pesticide use and adoption behaviour to identify levers and instruments to incentivise farmers to adopting IPM.

We ask

For this PhD position, we are searching an enthusiastic result-driven candidate with:

  • an MSc degree in either (1) behavioural, agricultural, or quantitative economics or (2) agricultural sciences with a proven interest in economics and social sciences;
  • the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team of social and natural scientists and having oral and written proficiency in English;
  • proven affinity with, or knowledge of European agriculture is required;
  • experience in quantitative economic analyses of farm-level data and interest in modelling farm behaviour.

The PhD project will take place within the

Business Economics (BEC) group

. You will be supervised by prof. Alfons Oude Lansink and dr. Jaap Sok.

BEC

is a strong research group including many young and talented people. Our group holds a key position in interdisciplinary research areas, such as food supply chain economics, bio-economic modelling, and economics of animal health, food safety and plant health. Also, BEC is internationally leading in measuring and modelling performance and risks and in the behavioural economic analysis of food supply chain actors, most notably farmers.

The gross salary for the first year is  € 2.541,- per month rising to € 3.247,- in the fourth year for a full-time working week of 38 hours, in accordance with the

Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU)

(scale P). We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well.
