PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project ”ProBND – Predicting and preventing brain damage in newborns”, funded by Trond Mohn Research Foundation.

About the project/work tasks:

• The project is based on analyses of data from Norwegian health registers and from the Norwegian mother, father and child study (MoBa).
• The analysis work will use register data that contains information about family relationships.
• Data from the Norwegian mother, father and child study will contain genotypes and information on epigenetics
• The PhD-candidate will participate in the PhD program at the faculty https://www.uib.no/en/med/64913/doctoral-education-faculty-medicine
• It is expected that the PhD-candidate can get familiar with the research area and data sources and understand the relevant research questions

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a master’s degree or the equivalent in medicine, health sciences, statistics or equivalent method-oriented subjects, or must have submitted his/her master’s thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
• Willingness and ability to participate in the analysis of large data sets with appropriate statical software will be an advantage
• Knowledge of and interest in epidemiology and genetics will be an advantage
• Relevant clinical experience from paediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics or neurology will count positively
• Knowledge of the Norwegian health system and the origin of the data sources will count positively
• The appointed person must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have good collaboration skills
• Ability and motivation to carry out a doctoral project will be emphasised
• Good written and spoken English, see documentation requirements

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is also required that the applicant enclose a review from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) whether the education (bachelor and master degree) in question is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree. The review from HK-dir may take some time and the application should be sent to HK-dir as soon as you have decided to apply for the position. Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.

• Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
