Job description
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with interest in abiotic stress tolerance research, and the crop tomato. Do you want to be a member of our team at Plant Breeding of Wageningen University & Research?
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD research position funded by NWO-DBT in collaboration with Radboud University, several institutes in India (including the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research) and Nunhems India called FieldHeat : Adapting tomato germplasm to the dry and humid heat of the Indian monsoonal climate.
Tomato is an important food crop and sustainable tomato production is a high priority around the world. However, the increase in temperature due to climate change is severely limiting tomato yields and production areas. In India heat stress is often compounded by extremes in air humidity. Adaptation to these different combined stress environments requires a specific and optimized set of traits and insight in the interplay between heat stress and humidity stress. In FieldHeat we characterize globally-sourced genetic resources of heat tolerant tomato genotypes for their suitability for cultivation in contrasting dry and/or humid hot conditions of India. We will use state-of-the-art phenomics facilities in The Netherlands as well as extensive field trials in the target production environment in India.
The PhD candidate in Wageningen will be involved in 3 of the 6 work packages of Fieldheat, which are geared towards genome sequencing and assembly of heat tolerant genotypes as well as discovery of breeding traits (and their QTLs) contributing to vegetative heat tolerance and crop water use under dry/humid heat conditions followed by potential gene identification.
Supervision will be done by Prof. Dr. Richard Visser & Dr. Gerard van der Linden. The successful candidate will be registered as a PhD student at Plant Breeding, Wageningen University & Research and be part of a dedicated research group on abiotic stress tolerance of crops.
