PhD Fellowship position in Information, Library and Archival Studies

OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway’s third largest university, with nearly 22,000 students and 2,200 employees. Through the students we educate and the research we produce, the university has a direct impact on society, both in Norway and beyond.

Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes within archivistics, library and information science, journalism and media studies, social work, social policy and child welfare, public management and business.

The faculty has about 4200 students and nearly 280 members of staff.

The Department has around 600 students and 40 employees and is located at the OsloMet Pilestredet Campus in Oslo. Multiple programs are offered through the department, including Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs in Library and Information Science and a Bachelor’s program in Archivistics and Records Management.

PhD Fellowship position in Information, Library and Archival Studies

The Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science currently has available one PhD Fellow position in Information, Library and Archival Studies, which is a specialization within the PhD programme in Social Sciences. The specialization currently has around 15 research fellows.

Profile

For this position, PhD fellow applicants can choose a topic related to one of the department’s four research groups:

• Information and society (INFOSAM): The group studies the social mission, professions, policies and use of institutions of culture, information, and media.
• Information in use (INFUSE): The group researches people’s needs for and use of information and its prerequisites at work, everyday-life, studies and leisure.
• Mediation of culture and literature (LITKULT): The group looks at how texts and other cultural expressions are constructed, gathered, and disseminated, and how they contribute towards individual and social development and understanding.
• Information systems based on metadata (METAINFO): The group does research on systems for organizing, retrieving, disseminating, and managing.

The department is a member of the international iSchools network, which means that the study programs and research should focus on the relationship between people, information/culture and technology. It is a prerequisite that the PhD project should do the same.

Applicants must prepare a PhD project with research questions and methods for data collection and data analysis. The project proposal should state how the project is relevant to one or more of the research groups at the department.

The duration of the PhD fellowship is three years.

Qualifications and requirements

Required qualifications

• Education at master’s degree level (120 ECTS) in a relevant field with a grade average of B or better, including grade on the MA thesis. In special cases, master’s degrees of 90 ECTS may be accepted
• Ability to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing
• Ability to work independently and goal oriented

• The PhD position requires admission to the PhD Programme in Social Sciences
• Final project plan for the fellowship period is required completed and acknowledged within 3 months after accession

When assessing applicants, the quality of the project proposal and the relevance of the proposal to the PhD program’s research area and at least one of the research groups at the department will be emphasized, as well as the quality of the applicant’s master thesis. The proposal must indicate that the project will realistically lead to a doctoral degree within the three-year period.

The proposal should consist of a maximum of 10 pages and must include the following elements:

• Research questions, theory, and method
• Relevant knowledge within the research area
• Schedule for the research plan
• Stated relevance for at least one of the research groups at the department

• Certificates/diplomas (all pages). The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT , and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
• Project proposal (maximum 10 pages)
• Your master’s degree/second degree thesis
• Any other scholarly work that you wish the expert committee to take into consideration
• References, if relevant

All documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language. Translations must be authorized.

Original documents and valid passport must be presented if you are invited for an interview. OsloMet performs document inspections to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title and position code. State salary wage scale 54, 501 200 NOK per year.
