Kristiania University College is offering a fully funded PhD fellowship in Applied Information Technology for a period of three (3) years beginning in January 2024. During this time, the successful applicant will be employed at the School of Economics, Innovation and Technology and included in a team of researchers with ambitious plans to further develop research and pedagogical activities at the university college.

About the position

The PhD position is a three-year full-time position that involves 30 ECTS credits of required course work. This is equivalent to one semester of study. The remaining time is allocated to the development and completion of an independent research project, which takes the form of a written dissertation. The three-year employment period granted to the successful candidate may be reduced if the successful candidate has previously been employed in a PhD position.

The successful candidate is expected to live and work in the Oslo region during the employment period and to take an active part in scholarly and social activities at Kristiania.

 

Project Description:

The overarching goal of the PhD position is to develop new physics-informed machine learning techniques for automatically determining the electrical causes of sudden cardiac arrest in patients with heart disease. Whereas traditional machine learning techniques are based on pure pattern recognition, physics informed machine learning incorporates theoretical knowledge in the form of differential equations. This is important for medical applications because detailed patient data are hard to acquire, and purely theoretical models are incomplete due to the complexity of the human body. In this project we have the opportunity to combine the best of both theory and data to improve our understanding of heart disease.

High quality pig and human data are available for the project through collaborators at King’s College London and Imperial College. These data consist of electrocardiograms and magnetic resonance images, which we can use to reconstruct the electrical activity of each patient’s or animal’s heart. This will strengthen the downstream clinical impact of the project, and facilitate translation of the project results into new AI powered medical technologies. The need for such technologies is acute, as sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of global mortality, killing a person every 8 seconds on average.

The PhD candidate will be affiliated with the Biophysical Machine Learning Project, based in the recently created AI Lab at Kristiania University College. The project also includes collaborations with Simula Research Laboratory, King’s College London, Imperial College London and the ProCardio Centre at Oslo University Hospital. The candidate will have the opportunity for research stays and workshops in London and Oslo to exchange ideas and deepen collaborations. The role as external Ph.D. student at Simula Research Laboratory additionally comes with the benefits of close collaboration in an excellent research environment, including access to shared office space, meeting rooms, and free coffee and refreshments.

The successful candidate must design an independent project that fits with the theme and research questions of the main project. The successful candidate should formulate the project such that it is integral to the development of knowledge within the area addressed by the main project. The successful candidate should also be able to argue that the project will contribute to the success of the main project by answering questions such as:

  • How can physics informed machine learning simulate the electrical causes of sudden cardiac arrest using cardiac electrogram and contrast enhanced MRI data?
  • How can we optimally leverage high resolution animal data to boost the accuracy of cardiac electricity simulations based on lower resolution human data?

    Qualifications and personal qualities

    Required qualifications:

    • Master’s degree (ECTS or equivalent) in Computational Physics, Data Science/Mathematics, Computer Science, Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering or related with a grade B or better on the master’s thesis and for the master’s degree in total. The master’s thesis must be a minimum of 30 ECTS or equivalent.
    • Relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree
    • Proficiency in both written and spoken English
    • The candidate must be familiar with machine learning, scientific programming, and Python.

    Desired qualifications (helpful but not required) :

    • Knowledge of partial differential equations and numerical solution techniques.
    • Knowledge of biology, medicine, and human physiology.

    Personal qualities:

    • Curiosity and a strong motivation to carry out independent research
    • Good communication and cooperation skills
    • Excellent analytical skills
    • The ability, desire and capacity to work independently, systematically, and purposefully
    • Orientation toward the completion of projects and the attainment of goals

    Evaluation of the applicants

    The candidate must be accepted to the PhD programme at the latest three months after signing the employment contract. To be accepted to this programme, one must fulfil the following requirements:

    • a relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree, and
    • a relevant 120 ECTS master’s degree (or integrated bachelor and master) with minimum 30 ECTS master thesis, and with grade similar to the Norwegian/European grade B or higher both in average for the master’s degree in total and for the master’s thesis alone.
