The Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands, is looking for a PhD candidate in the field of Quantum AI. The successful candidate will investigate the integration of Quantum Computing for machine-learning techniques and Monte-Carlo Search approaches.

Job description

The position is embedded in the Quantum & High-Performance Computing group of the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences . The candidate will work together with other PhD candidates, and senior researchers. The candidate will conduct research in Quantum Computing for Artificial Intelligence. The candidate will investigate the integration of Quantum Computing for machine-learning techniques and Monte-Carlo Search approaches in order to solve optimization problems.

The tasks of the successful candidate include:

• Research in Quantum Computing for AI.
• Publishing in top-tier journals and conferences.
• Participation in project meetings and contribution to reports, and participation in conferences.
• Assistance in teaching activities in the department

Requirements

• A master’s degree (already completed or near completion) in STEM with an affinity in Computer Science.
• Excellent programming and mathematical skills are required.
• Solid experience and interest in latest advances in AI or Quantum Computing
• Excellent command of English.
• We are looking for a passionate and creative researcher, with serious interest in publishing in top venues in the field.
• Being a team player.
• Strong presentation, writing, communication and organization skills are required for this position.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The full-time position is offered for a duration of four years, with yearly evaluations.

The salary will be set in PhD salary scale of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities (€2.541 gross per month in first year to €3.247 in the fourth and final year). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply. You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity) of Maastricht. Non-Dutch applicants could be eligible for a favorable tax treatment (30% rule)

The preferred starting date is February 1st, 2023.
