At the University of Tübingen, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Department of Com-puter Science, is a

Ph.D. position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%) or Post-Doc position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 100%) – AI-based Optimization of Distributed Computing

available to be filled as soon as possible, but no later than 01.02.2023. The position is financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and is limited to 36 months.

Application deadline: 07.10.2022

Project description and duties:
The project aims at developing cooperative AI- and ML-based de-cision-making strategies that improve the potential of distributed computing platforms (such as edge/fog computing) in terms of resource efficiency (self-optimization), stability (self-organization), and sustainability (self-diagnosis and self-healing). The challenges include information shortage, het-erogeneity of computing nodes, communication constraints, and randomness in crucial optimization parameters. The focus is on three main issues in the autonomous computing networks: distributed task management, efficient resource pooling, and strategic function placement. Among others, the methodology includes submodular optimization with limited feedback.
Profile description:
Applicants must possess a recent excellent M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in computer science (machine learning and artificial intelligence), operations research, mathematics (statistics, probability theory), electrical engineering (edge/fog computing, wireless communications), or another tightly related field. A strong mathematical background and the interest/motivation to work on theo-retical problems are necessary. Good programming skills (at least MATLAB or Python) and English proficiency are also required. Knowledge of German is a positive point.

How to apply:
Please send your application as a single pdf file to Prof. Maghsudi (setareh.maghsudispam prevention@uni-tuebingen.de ). The application should include (i) full CV including publications and the contact information of at least two references, (ii) transcripts records for both graduate and undergraduate levels, (iii) theses if in English or German, (iv) publications (if any). Only complete applications can be considered.

The applications are considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

The university seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women academics to apply for these positions. Equally qualified applicants with disabilities will be given preference.
The employment will be carried out by the central administration of the University of Tübingen.
