PGT Module Leader – Independent Prescribing
School of Optometry and Vision Sciences

The innovative Postgraduate Taught programmes at WOPEC in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University incorporate both distance learning and contact teaching. We are seeking to appoint a part time module leader to join our motivated postgraduate teaching team. 

Module Leaders work to develop, deliver and evaluate modules/ programmes within the postgraduate qualification provision in the School. As well as teaching and assessing students, they are responsible for the day to day running of a module and the teaching and assessment including co-ordinating other members of staff that contribute. 

This post will contribute and/ or lead the modules that make up the Certificate in Therapeutic Prescribing. 

This post is for one day a week (0.2 FTE) and is open-ended appointment. 

Most of the teaching and assessment is online but attendance at a number of in-person days in Cardiff is required in October and attendance at Exam Board/ Board of Studies in February and in July required each year.

The salary is Grade 7 plus market supplement: £59,356 – £65,757 per annum, pro rata.

Job Description

Main Purpose

To undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of postgraduate teaching and assessment up to Masters level. To supervise students, provide feedback and be responsible for the pastoral care of students. To carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To be responsible for delivery and content of a module on the optometry postgraduate taught courses.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To act as a module leader for a postgraduate teaching including co-ordinating with other contributors to ensure delivery of a high standard of teaching to meet student needs and expectations.

To design appropriate teaching materials at a postgraduate level.

To deliver postgraduate teaching including recording lectures and delivering tutorials.

To identify the need for developing/ revising the content or structure of modules and curriculum and make proposals on how this should be achieved.

To teach in a variety of settings from small group sessions to large lectures.

To set, mark and assess work and examinations and provide feedback to students, including replying to E-Mail and other communication with students within an appropriate time period.

To be responsible for administrative duties in areas such timetabling, examinations, assessment of progress and student attendance.

To manage projects relating to own area of work and the organisation of external activities such as practical days outside of the School of Optometry.

To develop ideas for promoting the subject.

To supervise student projects, where appropriate.

To act as module tutor and to be responsible for the pastoral care of students within a specified area.

To participate in and develop external networks eg facilitate outreach work; obtain consultancy projects, secure student placements.

To possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop teaching programmes and the provision of learning support.

To be recognised externally as an authority in own specialist subject area.

To mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on personal development.

To undertake personal and professional development that is appropriate to and will enhance the performance in the role of Lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship).

General

To participate in School meetings and committees, as appropriate.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1.  GOC registered optometrist or an ophthalmologist (for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, not for Leadership). 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2. At minimum of 5 years post registration experience as a practising optometrist
3.  Specialist knowledge of Leadership in health care and the ophthalmic sector/ Cataract and refractive surgery.
4.  Experience of teaching at postgraduate level in a variety of settings.
5.  Effective teaching skills with the ability to deliver high-quality lectures and tutorials, facilitate peer discussions and  develop own teaching materials and methods and meet defined learning objectives.
6.  IT competent- Powerpoint, Microsoft Word and the internet.

Communication and Team Working
7.  Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and confidently to others using a range of media.
8.  Highly Organised and able to work using own initiative
9.  Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to make appropriate decisions on academic content of courses.
10.  The ability to provide appropriate support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.

Desirable criteria

1.  Evidence of ability to reflect on performance following feedback in order to improve teaching design and delivery.
2.  Ability to work at least 4 evenings and 4 weekends a year.
3.  Higher Professional Qualifications in Optometry
