Perioperative Review Specialist RN, Per Diem

The clinical Perioperative Review Specialist evaluates clinical performance of other health care professionals’ clinician-to-clinician, to identify improvement opportunities that drive quality and safety of care outcomes. Responsible to serve as a subject matter expert in perioperative clinical review, clinical workflows, quality of care, and patient access to care.  Identify opportunities to effectively integrate clinical review functions into quality assurance activities overall and participate in overall program governance activities as requested. Prepare and presents findings, inclusive of clinical workflow recommendations, to clinical quality review decision makers that uphold various regulatory and accreditation requirements. Accountable to perform timely reviews, accurately document case reviews, appropriately communicate outcomes, support clinicians receiving timely performance feedback, ensure clinical performance ratings are focused on activity-specific performance and use reliable metrics, and monitor program outcomes as assigned. 

Collaborate with leadership and peers in the application of clinical knowledge and expertise, in a way that exemplifies a culture of safety and high-reliability. Apply advanced critical thinking, coaching and teaching, skills and knowledge of performance improvement techniques and processes to meet outcomes.  Work independently in prioritizing, planning, and determining methods to accomplish work assignments within the parameters of existing policies, procedures, and operating instructions. Responsible to provide recommendations that support and sustain established levels of clinical competency.

  • Identify which cases meet established criteria for clinical case review through assessment of information from various data systems as assigned.

  • Accurately abstract and validate clinical data within established workflows, applying expert nursing knowledge.

  • Prepare clinical summaries, data trending, and reports that includes expert clinical knowledge of medical tests performed to diagnose patients’ health condition, treatment plan for patients based on diagnosis, laboratory test results of patients, and validates lab test result process.

  • Implements the improvement of patient care, healthcare policies and processes.

  • Verify completed work products by ensuring accuracy of data and soundness of findings, actions, conclusions, and/or recommendations, attainment of program objectives, and compliance with regulatory guides, policies, procedures, and instructions.

  • Make recommendations that directly affect the clinical practice, nursing practice, and patient care to identified clinical leadership decision makers on related performance improvement of assigned deliverable, and make recommendations to improve clinical workflows and patient care outcomes.

  • Responsible to sustain fluency and serve as a subject matter expert in perioperative core competency, performance metrics, clinical workflows, medical knowledge, patient access to care, and related matters. 

  • Ensure processes and deliverables influence patient safety and clinical performance for the University of Miami Health System.  

  • Coordinate and effectively communicate with leadership, staff, and committee members to ensure clinical quality is performed systematically, consistently and evidenced based.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary improvement strategies by active participation on interdisciplinary committees or groups that evaluate clinical practice and patient care outcomes.

  • Manage assigned tasks, databases, information, and other resources to provide necessary documentation and communication within the perioperative review process in collaboration with the perioperative executive leadership team.

  • Effectively leverage data from various internal sources and cross-reference established workflows.

  • Provide support and expertise to perform general functions for the department as requested, inclusive, but not limited to staff education, committee support, continuous accreditation preparedness, quality assurance, data collection and validation, chart and documentation review.

  • Responsible to sustain fluency in clinical workflows and practices.

  • Demonstrate ability to set priorities and complete work accurately within established timeframes.

  • Role models and fosters accountability in others for professional practice and improvement of patient care, i.e., performance improvement activities, and patient safety.

  • Provide auxiliary support as needed, e.g., clinical database coordination; team/task force development and facilitation; maintenance of policies and procedures.

  • Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies, procedures, and safeguards University assets.

QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                    

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree; BSN degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Minimum State of Florida Registered Nurse (RN); or ability to obtain a Florida licensure by endorsement in first six months of position start date.  Preference given to Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Clinical licensure must be kept clear and active for duration of employment.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years clinical/hospital work experience. Clinical experience with demonstrated ability to work within established workflows and public speaking and presentation experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite programs, Excel, PowerPoint, Word.

Preference given to any combination of the following experiences:

  • Candidates with a minimum of 6 months’ work experience inclusive of clinical quality review are strongly preferred.

  • Coursework, continuing education completion of quality and patient safety, clinical informatics, patient centered outcomes, quality improvement, and related topics.

  • Familiar with aspects of care, standards of care metrics for accreditation and maintenance.

  • Experience with EpicCare Ambulatory Core EMR (EpicCare Ambulatory, Care Everywhere, MyUHealthChart, Workbench)

  • Experience with spreadsheets and database software.

  • Evidence of ability to draw on knowledge from the following areas: Measurement of patient needs and nursing workload, continuous process improvement processes, performance improvement, service excellence, systems for patient safety, healthcare quality.
