Producing green hydrogen using water electrolysis is an important step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolsers (PEMWE) have gained a lot of attention due to their compact design, durability, and quick response time. Furthermore, their potential for integration with renewable energy sources makes them an attractive contender for large-scale hydrogen production. The biggest issue with the present PEMWE is its high capital and operational costs. Despite advances in PEMWE design, additional study should be conducted to investigate novel materials, designs, and production processes.
This project aims to
Depending on their background, the candidate may choose to focus on the electrolyser design optimisation or system level simulation.
This project is open-ended making it suitable for MSc by Research and PhD level.
Applicants should apply via the University’s online application system at https://www.york.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/apply/. Please read the application guidance first so that you understand the various steps in the application process.
Candidates should have (or expect to obtain) a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2.1) or equivalent in Mechanical, Chemical, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, or a related subject. Previous modelling experience in MATLAB/Simulink, Ansys or relevant software packages is essential.
