Position Details

General Statement The Office of Human Resources projects pride and enthusiasm in support of the University’s mission and strategic plan by providing leadership, guidance and administration of classification, recruitment, payroll, benefits and employee/labor relations in a professional and dedicated manner to the Montana State University Bozeman campus, Agricultural Experiment Stations and Extension Service.
The person in this position is an effective team member within the Office of Human Resources providing support and excellent customer service. The Payroll Team focuses on data stewardship, customer service, accountability, communication, and teamwork. Responsibilities include: assisting and responding to inquiries/requests regarding Payroll Services, maintenance of a variety of spreadsheets; and extensive use of a relational database ( Banner) as required.Opportunities are available to learn all aspects of HR to motivated persons while serving as backup in other areas.
Duties and Responsibilities Under direct supervision, this position provides payroll processing support and excellent customer service to the MSU community. This position is responsible for processing accurate and timely biweekly payrolls as part of a team. This includes answering a multitude of questions in a variety of formats, advising constituents of payroll processing deadlines and performing procedures such as:
  • Processing garnishments, fees, and deductions in accordance with governmental guidelines.
  • Reconciling leave balances and pay history.
  • Reviewing and applying Electronic Personnel Action Forms (EPAF) and data entering additional information in a timely manner.
  • Participating in training and providing payroll related training to a wide variety of people with various levels of understanding of the subject.
  • Processing payments for various third party vendors.
  • Actively participating as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department’s mission.
  • Identifying and suggesting process improvements.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing numbers in order to determine accurate transactions or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience using computers and various software packages.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience including effectively and diplomatically responding to a diverse clientele that may include handling difficult customer service situations.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience with human resources policies and procedures.
  • Experience processing payroll.
