JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Pattee/Paterno Library is currently seeking a Part-time Library Staff Assistant . We are looking for warm and outgoing team members with a strong work ethic and a firm commitment to providing the best possible user experience and who are willing to learn and seek opportunities to grow and build on their knowledge.

We are currently looking for staff who are available to work for the remainder of the Fall Semester (beginning in November) and through the Spring Semester 2023. Hours and schedule will vary from one semester to the next.    

 

Common Services employees are typically the first library staff who welcome and greet library users. First impressions are everything!  We expect our staff members to provide warm,  welcoming,  friendly service with a pleasant attitude. Our goal is to assist users in locating information or resources to ensure they successfully reach their library needs, whether it be advanced library research help, study spaces or print and online materials.   

 

Required Materials:

Job Duties:

  • Greet patrons with a welcoming attitude.

  • Make referrals to the Search Bar, Librarians, and full-time staff as appropriate.   

  • Answer directional, informational, and basic reference questions in person or on the telephone. 

  • Provide group study room information and reservation assistance. 

  • Collaborate with other departments to provide additional services. 

  • Open/Close the library. 

  • Assist in collection of unit statistics.

  • Shelve returned library materials.

  • Pull requested library items. 

  • Attend on-going reference and library trainings for professional development. 

  • Promote and engage with Common Services Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility initiatives and learning.

  • Circulate library materials. 

  • Assist patrons with placing holds on library materials including InterLibrary Loan items.

 

Safety and Security:

  • Respond to gate and panel alarms according to procedures.

  • Serve as fire marshal in an emergency evacuation. 

  • Call appropriate outside agency and alert other staff in the event of an incident/injury.

  • Contact the appropriate supervisor to resolve problems with patron behavior. 

 

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and active listening skills are important as well as the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with internal and external patrons and library colleagues using patience and diplomacy.    

  • Ability to follow directions and keep a schedule.

  • Commitment to diversity.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Prior customer service experience is helpful.

  • Familiarity with information technology is strongly preferred.

  • Prior library, customer or hospitality experience is preferred.

  • Must be available to work weekends.

  • Hours will vary. Must be willing to work a combination of evenings and weekends and maintain a minimum of ten hours of scheduled time per week.
