JOB DESCRIPTION – COURIER

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES (Describe job-related characteristics or abilities as they relate to specific functions of the position. May include technical expertise, level of critical

1. Ability to establish effective patient rapport
2. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
3. Technical Competencies: Able to operate transportation equipment (i.e., wheelchairs, stretchers, and E-cylinder oxygen tanks).
4. Motor Skills: Precise eye-hand coordination and dexterity for the ability to operate and adjust equipment.
5.. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, co-workers, physicians, volunteers, and family members.
6. Mental Abilities: Ability to exercise independent judgment. Ability to recognize IV pump alarms during transport and notify appropriate personnel.
Sensory Requirements: Ability to visually assess patient’s general condition during transport. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, family members, and others, as needed.
POSITION PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Transports patients efficiently and in a timely manner to and from the Department in accordance with department time standards as evidenced by random activity log audits.
2. Responsible for performing various aide activities under the direction of a radiologic technologist, such as putting the patient on the exam table..
3. Coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift.
4. Accurately notes all patients’ names by identifying them by their name and medical record number as evidenced by random observation by supervisor.
5. Properly documents required information on floor log sheet for each transport perform ancillary department as monitored by random audits of logs.
6. Check with patient’s Nurse prior to the start of any activity/transport. Only transports patients with identification bracelets and following clearance from the patients’ nurse
7. Correctly stores all contrast media within the department, keeping all contrast and supplies for injections in locked cabinetry in the department.
8. Maintains patient’s privacy during transport, utilizing sheets/blankets.
9. Brings necessary paper work from the unit with the patient during transport (i.e., medical record, key plate, etc.) as monitored by supervising Technologist/Dispatcher.
10. Notifies supervisor of the area, within ten minutes of being dispatched, of any delays in transporting the patient (i.e., physician in the room, patient receiving treatment) as observed by transportation activity log.
11. Responsible for returning all transportation equipment to the Radiology Department after completion of each transport request when equipment is not needed for a turn-around request.
12. Displays proper use and care of transportation equipment as observed by management comments received.
13. Operates and maintains assigned equipment in an effective and safe manner. Immediately reports equipment hazards or malfunctions to the Courier Dispatcher as monitored by Plant Operations work requests.
14. Responsible for adhering to infection control policies and procedures. Follows universal precaution guidelines at all times and wears Personal Protective Equipment appropriate for the task to be performed.
15. Responsible for utilizing proper body mechanics.
16. Transports contrast media to the Emergency Dept. for CT scans as needed, informing the Nurse in charge of the patient who is responsible for contrast at the patient’s bedside and oversees administration.
17. Responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment and insures cleanliness prior to use by subsequent patients as monitored by supervising Technologist/Dispatcher and comments received.
18. Adheres to Patient Bill of Rights. Respects patient’s privacy. Al ways knocks or requests entrance to patient’s room prior to entering regardless of whether it is open or closed.
19. Attends and participates in Departmental meetings.
20. Demonstrates an understanding of emergency drills, evacuation procedures and internal/external disaster plans and procedures as evidenced by in-service attendance records and participation in drills.
21. Adheres to hospital/department attendance policies.
22. Schedules and attends to personal business outside of normal work schedule.
23. Exercises flexibility in schedule by working various shifts and days at Supervisor’s request in order to meet departmental or hospital staffing needs.
24. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be done, although not directly assigned
25. Responsible for reporting to the supervising Technologist and/or Dispatcher upon completion of all assigned duties for additional activities to be performed.
26. Adheres to and supports the concepts and ideals of the Diamond Program.
27. Applies physical age-specific care to applicable populations as documented by the Competency Validation Checklist:
a. Children
b. Adolescents
c. Adults
d. Geriatric
e. Challenged/Disabled

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:
Meets hospital-wide requirements by submitting annual tuberculin test and any other medical required for job classification and attends necessary in-service/education programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Included but not limited to the following)
1. The position requires considerable amount of physical work not to exceed 50
pounds. This work may involve, but is not limited to lifting, carrying, pushing, or
repositioning of objects, pieces of equipment, or patients. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: (Included but not limited to the following)
1. This person spends 100% of their time in air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to excessive humidity or noise. The position does have some
exposure to malodorous, infectious, body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
2. Physical Environment:
• 100% of the shift in an air conditioned environment.
• Noise levels range from low to high
3. Personal Protective Equipment/Universal Precautions:
