Scope of Position:    

The Revenue Cycle for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is responsible for providing excellent customer service while completing the following responsibilities accurately and efficiently; processing patient demographic and insurance information, scheduling appointments, procedures, surgeries, and admissions, and continuously supporting patient and payer billing tasks and cash collection responsibilities. Areas within the Revenue Cycle include pre-registration, registration, pre-certification, financial clearance and counseling, financial assistance, scheduling, billing, claims follow-up, customer service and cash collection. The primary responsibility of staff within the Revenue Cycle is to optimally perform duties that ensure the collection of net revenue for services rendered while providing top of class customer service.

Position Summary:    

Must be an expert in all healthcare access areas and disease specific product and service line.  Work closely with hospital staff, clinicians, physicians and division staff.  Triage patient calls according to established algorithms, answering questions, resolving issues and referring to appropriate clinical team for clinical issues as appropriate. Responsible for providing consumers (physicians and patients) with accurate, up-to-date information regarding services and general procedures.  Functions as a liaison between medical team and consumer by coordinating their requests and satisfying their needs in one phone call.  Request and review new patient medical records in accordance with disease specific standards to ensure complete record is received prior to first appointment.  Works with physician and clinical teams to create and manage master clinic schedules and templates to ensure efficient patient flow in clinic.  Accurately schedules appointments/services as required.  Assures accurate information is gathered to support clinical and financial needs. Obtains registration data within 24 hours of scheduling an appointment/admission to begin the insurance verification, precertification and/or financial assistance processes.  This includes interviews with patients and/or family members to obtain the most up to date demographic and financial information.  Quality data collection of accurate information including demographic, physician, insurance, employment, next of kin, emergency contacts and other miscellaneous information needed to complete the patient’s information. Displays the highest level of customer service, attentiveness and consideration possible in all cases.

Uses scheduling and registration software applications, telecommunication technology, and customer service skills to facilitate customer interactions such that the customer experiences the Medical Center and its entities as an accessible, coordinated and seamless entity. Generates system reports and utilizes system reporting tools as well as the reporting tools of Microsoft Office products to demonstrate product line success and/or opportunities for improvement relative to referrals, access, appointments and precertification and denial trends for problem resolution.

Minimum Qualifications:

For Hire:   

Per CCS requirements.  High School Diploma or GED.  PC knowledge and interpersonal, verbal and written communication. Minimum 6 months experience in customer service or a healthcare environment. Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience in healthcare, insurance or physician practice preferred. Experience with, or knowledge of medical terminology desired.  Medical terminology, ICD-9 diagnosis coding and third party reimbursement experience preferred. Ability to work in self-directed manner while interacting with consumers, physicians and all medical center faculty and staff.  Familiarity with OSUMC and its entities preferred. Able to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks in a busy environment.
