The Center for African Studies (CAS) is seeking to hire a highly organized and skilled outreach engagement coordinator who will coordinate outreach activities and serve as the Center’s liaison with our various partners. These include K-16 faculty, teachers and students, the business community, civic and religious organizations, state and federal agencies, and the public. The position will create initiatives that will offer African Studies Inservice/professional workshops and seminars, Africa study tours, summer programs for students, online curriculum, and audio-visual materials. The position will also maintain a calendar for outreach events and will work closely with community partners to plan and execute outreach activities. Will assist in preparing an annual budget and monitor expenditures on the related budget allocation within the external funds available for this purpose and assist with writing grant proposals that will fund K-16 educational programs and community outreach activities.

The position requires a Master’s degree, with excellent communication skills, oral and/or written proficiency and knowledge of related cultures of Africa. The position requires at least 2 or more years of related experience in the K-16 education system and working with community groups. Flexibility and ability to work with a team in an educational setting from K-16 to university level is crucial. The outreach engagement coordinator must be a committed advocate for increasing the number of low-income and underrepresented minority individuals participating in our programming. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: connect the Center for African Studies with K-16 educational institutions and community groups; nurture new and existing partnerships with K-16 educational institutions and community groups; plan and organize outreach activities for K-16, public community events, workshops, appearances, and communication opportunities that promote the study of Africa in our region; maintain a calendar of outreach activities and events and ensure effective data collection and analysis; prepare an annual budget for community outreach and engagement activities; and work as a team at the Center in planning academic and social events around campus.


Master’s in Education, Humanities, or Social Sciences or related field required. Knowledge of the culture, history, politics, and/or societies of contemporary Africa and the African Diaspora preferred. Proficiency in an African language(s) preferred. Please indicate experience and language proficiencies in your application materials. Experience in local school systems or familiarity with current educational trends and issues strongly preferred. The position will be asked to organize professional development workshops for educators and may be asked to give presentations or lectures. The incumbent will also be required to assist with programs and events with a high degree of professionalism.
