Optical Engineer

The Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) is searching for an experienced Optical Engineer to join our Electro-Optics (EO) Research Team in Dayton, OH. The successful candidate will utilize a strong engineering or physics background designing, testing, modeling, simulating, and analyzing the next generation of EO systems and concepts.
In this role, you will be responsible for solving unique intricate problems that require experience in multiple technical areas and develop highly innovative solutions. The engineer in this case will need to be able to manage large projects and work with team members internally to meet project objectives, and communicate effectively with senior leadership regarding the project.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independent design, planning, and execution leading teams of engineers to work on electro-optical system projects
- Apply physics-based modeling and simulation to complex technical problems
- Perform analysis of large data sets and develop tools for visualization and manipulation of the data
- Work well in a small team environment
- Be familiar with Linux, Windows, MS Office tools like PowerPoint and Excel, MATLAB, Zemax OpticStudio (or equivalent)
- Present project results to internal team for reviews, customers, workshops / conferences, and to senior leadership
- Guide engineers with less experience in areas of expertise
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in optical engineering, physics, or related technical field with 12+ years of relevant experience or Master’s degree with 10+ years of relevant experience or Ph.D. with 8+ years of relevant experience in the electro-optical and/or infrared domain.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- Project management experience
- Subject matter expert within technical domain (e.g. lasers, broadband light sources, optics, electro-optics, detectors, cameras, calibration equipment, diagnostic equipment)
- MATLAB and/or Python programming expertise
- Optical design software experience (e.g. Zemax, Code-V, etc.)
- Strong communication and organization skills, to work effectively with senior leadership
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in optical engineering or physics
- Strong statistics education or experience
- Experience modeling and testing high-power laser systems
- Experience modeling laser propagation through atmosphere

Pay Range:
Pay Range $122,200.00 – $220,900.00
