Position Overview Oversee daily operations at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center; manage operation budgets and expenditures through supervision of financial technicians and administrative staff; manage staff performing ranch operations; hire and train staff and evaluate performance. Oversee operation and maintenance of equipment and buildings. Work with faculty to coordinate research and Extension activities with cattle and land resources at NMCREEC.
Unit Overview The Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center is the University of Idaho’s primary cow-calf and forage research station. The center provides land and facilities for beef cattle research at the scale of a working ranch. The center also provides continuing education for those involved in the livestock industry and learning opportunities for University of Idaho students.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Oversee Daily Research Operations of Nancy M. Cummings REE Center by:
Job Duties
  • Coordinating and supervising operations, field and equipment availability and maintenance, managing staff activity, and regularly planning with operations staff and faculty to accommodate specific research and education needs of UI faculty, staff and students.
  • Coordinating cattle and forage production.
  • Hiring and training operations staff and evaluating performance.
  • Supervising staff and temporary help employees (including minors).
  • Counseling employees and resolving personnel issues.
  • Managing station budgets and expenditures.
  • Managing the facilities maintenance and cattle/field operation purchases and serving as a primary contact for Center operations.
  • Establishing ranch maintenance standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Possessing the strength, agility, and ability to work in inclement weather; ensuring compliance with University policy, and Federal and State laws.
  • Annually updating Nancy M. Cummings Policy Manuals.
  • Providing updates on programs to college administration.
  • Ensuring active and open communications with involved faculty, staff and administrators.
  • Driving to job sites, meetings, and to perform other related job responsibilities.
Key Accountability Oversee Field and Cattle Operations by:
Job Duties
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff.
  • Sending notices for cattle and field requests.
  • Processing work order requests.
  • Coordinating and assigning cattle access and field allocations.
  • Managing routine cattle health, grazing, feeding, transportation and management operations.
  • Managing crop rotations.
  • Managing irrigation schedule.
  • Maintaining detailed cattle health and use records.
  • Maintaining records on field use, fertilizer and pesticide applications, and history.
  • Invoicing users of fields and cattle as appropriate.
Key Accountability Facilitate Research at the Center by:
Job Duties
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to coordinate needs for cattle, facilities, equipment and ranch operations staff.
  • Ensuring university, state and federal rules and regulations are met.
  • Researching and recommending practices to facilitate research projects.
Key Accountability Ensure a Safe Work Environment by:
Job Duties
  • Ensuring compliance with the Clean Water Act, Farm Safety Act, worker protection provisions, and supervising pesticide applications.
  • Developing standard operating procedures for farm and research staff.
  • Ensuring training, proper storage and handling of drugs and chemicals.
  • Planning and/or facilitating safety training for farm and research operations staff.
  • Ensuring proper training of UI employees in the safe operation of equipment, such as tractors, trailers and off-road vehicles; developing and implementing management and cattle handling techniques that maximize safety.
  • Identifying training needs and determining appropriate training methods.
  • Coordinating with CALS Safety Committee.
Key Accountability Supervising Maintenance and Custodial Personnel by:
Job Duties
  • Overseeing field, equipment, and building maintenance by farm operations and facilities management staff.
  • Coordinating care and maintenance of the Center, including office and laboratory buildings, pastures, lawns, roadways, irrigation equipment and infrastructure, fences, and ditches.
  • Winter snow removal.
  • Providing guidance and assistance as necessary.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience
  • Four years related experience in animal science or ranch management.
  • Experience with managing personnel, facilities, and budgets in a cattle ranch operation.
  • Editing and writing business correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Experience using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, email and internet.
  • Experience working in a team environment to accomplish shared goals.
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science or related field.
Required Licensures, Certifications or other
  • Pesticide applicator’s license or ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully pass a driver’s record check.
Additional Preferred
  • Master’s degree in agriculture or related discipline or two years of related research experience in animal science or ranch management beyond B.S. degree.
  • Experience with irrigated agriculture.
  • Knowledge of operations and maintenance of farm equipment.
  • Knowledge of farm/ranch and industrial safety issues and the ability to provide safety training.
  • Familiarity with agricultural research.
  • Familiarity with farm management software.
  • Experience with verbal skills in communications with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move up to 80 lbs.
Working Conditions
  • Duties may be performed in inclement weather.
