Offer DescriptionThe University of Klagenfurt wants to attract more qualified women for professorships.The Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics, Faculty of Social Sciences, is seeking applicants for an Open Rank Professorship in General Sociology, beginning 1 October 2025.This open rank announcement includes a university professorship either as a permanent position in compliance with § 98, as a five-year term position in compliance with § 99(1), or as a tenure-track professorship as a six-year term position in compliance with § 99(5) & (6) of the Austrian Universities Act. The decision on the type of appointment by § 98, § 99(1), or § 99(5) & (6) of the Austrian Universities Act will be made during the appointment process.The University of Klagenfurt is a young, vibrant, and innovative university at the crossroads of Alpine and Mediterranean cultures-in a region with an exceptionally high quality of life. The Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics ( ) was founded on 1 January 2024, combining the three former Departments of Science, Technology and Society Studies, Science Communication and Higher Education Research, and Sociology. The faculty and department thrive through a collegial and cooperative culture in their daily work and further development of its international profile. A new English-language Bachelor’s program in the Social Sciences (with an emphasis on Social Change / Social Transformations) will start in the 2026/27 academic year and be offered by all Departments of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The future professor will play a central role in this new program, contribute to other Bachelor’s and Master’s level programs, and supervise doctoral students in Sociology (Dr. phil., Dr. rer. soc. oec.).The duties of the position include:

  • Represent General Sociology in research and teaching, together with at least one additional sociological specialization, such as Labor and Industrial Sociology, Organizational Sociology, Political Sociology, Environmental and Sustainability Sociology, or Global and Transnational Sociology
  • Apply for and conduct competitive third-party-funded research projects
  • Contribute to the (further) development of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs at the Department, particularly the new English-language Bachelor’s program in the Social Sciences, as well as social science modules for other study programs (Major/Minor)
  • Advise and supervise students
  • Promote early-career researchers and contribute to the doctoral program
  • Contribute to the further development of the Department, including its international reputation
  • Engage in interdisciplinary cooperation and contribute to one of the research areas of the Department, Faculty, and/or University
  • Develop additional research areas at the Department, Faculty, and/or University
  • Participate in university management

Required qualifications (depending on the hiring level at the time of appointment):

  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in Sociology (for professorships according to § 98 or § 99(1) of the Austrian Universities Act)
  • Very good doctoral degree
  • Excellent publication record
  • Excellent research in (at least) one sociological specialization
  • Proven teaching experience and didactical competence in higher education
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Very good language skills (written & spoken) in German and English

Additional qualifications:

  • International visibility through research and publications
  • Experience in acquiring and managing third-party-funded research projects
  • Experience in international research and/or teaching collaboration
  • Experience with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations as well as Third-Mission activities
  • Innovative approaches to the development and teaching of theories and methods
  • Experience in university management
  • Competence in gender mainstreaming and diversity management

Recognition of relevant prior experience is possible.A Tenure-Track Professorship requires completing a qualification agreement (QA) according to § 27 of the Austrian Universities’ Collective Bargaining Agreement concerning research, independent teaching, leadership and administrative duties, and external experience. The employment contract will be concluded as a postdoctoral position with an option for a QA. Upon completion of the QA, the title will be Assistant Professor.
