The Office of Medical Education has an opening for a Director of the Mentored Scholarly Activity (MD Program) at 0.3 FTE.

• The position will report to the Assistant Dean for Longitudinal Curriculum and the Assistant Dean for Medical Education, Post-Clerkship (Alpine & Summit) Curriculum

Position Emphasis:

The Mentored Scholarly Activity program is a required element of the medical school program. The goal of the MSA is to foster self-directed, life-long learning. The MSA requires students to identify and work with a mentor to develop and complete scholarly projects over their four years in medical school. Scholarly projects are defined broadly: examples include research, education, service learning, ethics, and quality improvement projects.  This longitudinal program culminates with each student presenting their work via a written manuscript, poster, and oral presentation. There are approximately 650 medical students in the program across the 4-year MD program. The MSA Director and Associate Directors guide and support students to achieve the requirements of the MSA Program. 

Examples of Work Performed:

• Plan, develop, oversee, and administer MSA curriculum and experiences for medical students throughout the 4-year curriculum
• Ensure that the MSA curriculum provides students with competencies as outlined by the SOM and accrediting bodies
• Work with evaluation specialists in the SOM to ensure evaluation of the MSA curriculum and experiences.
• Communicate with students and faculty mentors regarding the MSA projects and curriculum
• Work collaboratively with faculty, MSA Associate Directors, MSA curriculum coordinator, and curriculum leadership to ensure an excellent educational experience for students
• Meet with students to determine potential project interests, suggest and identify mentors, , or trouble shoot issues.
• Attend student work-in-progress sessions and provide feedback
• Grade student manuscript drafts, final papers and provide timely written feedback; determine and assign overall course grades for students
• Plan and execute the Capstone event (spring) to assess oral and poster presentations
• Work to innovate and improve existing experiences and curriculum based on evaluation data and feedback
• Attend Longitudinal Curriculum Committee meetings (quarterly).
• Provide reports to the Curriculum Committees for the SOM
• Attend weekly MSA Director and Associate Director Meetings
• Develop resources for students and mentors
• Develop student remediation plans as needed

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at $30,000 to $60,000 as .30 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000 (same for all ranks: Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, and Clinical Professor).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Minimum Qualifications (for all ranks):

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Clinical Assistant Professor: 

• Doctoral level degree (including MD or DO)
• Full or part-time faculty with a current faculty appointment at the CU SOM.
• The successful applicant will have significant research and mentoring experience, including broad knowledge of potential faculty mentors and campus resources as needed. 

Clinical Associate Professor: 

• Doctoral level degree (including MD or DO)
• Full or part-time faculty with a current faculty appointment at the CU SOM.
• The successful applicant will have significant research and mentoring experience, including broad knowledge of potential faculty mentors and campus resources as needed.

Clinical Professor: 

• Doctoral level degree (including MD or DO)
• Full or part-time faculty with a current faculty appointment at the CU SOM.
• The successful applicant will have significant research and mentoring experience, including broad knowledge of potential faculty mentors and campus resources as needed.

Preferred Qualifications (same for all ranks: Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor): 

• Curriculum development experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience with and knowledge of the medical student education program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is also desirable.
