One or more PhD Stipends in 6G and future communication systems (8-22091)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, one or more PhD stipends in 6G and future communication systems are available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipends are open for appointment from February 1, 2023, or soon as possible thereafter.

In electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems consists of more than 200 employees, of which about 40 % are international and about 90 are enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department’s excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research.

The Department’s research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, AI, sound, cybersecurity and robotics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners and IPR. The Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

6G wireless systems have the ambition to move beyond communication, embracing positioning and sensing and gluing everything through algorithms based on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Our research group is looking to expand the methods of communication theory towards sensing, inference, machine learning, positioning, network economics, privacy, and quantum communication.

In this context, multiple PhD positions will be opened within the area of 6G and future communication systems. The successful candidates will work with one or more of the following topics:

  • Semantic and goal-oriented communication systems.
  • Integration of communication with distributed machine learning and inference;
  • Communication models that integrate classical and quantum communication systems;
  • Use of machine learning methods to design and optimize communication protocols;
  • Optimizing timing performance in communication systems;
  • Radio access protocol and spectrum allocation for IoT (Internet of Things) connections;
  • Open Radio Access Networks (RAN), both theoretical and experimental aspects;
  • Real-time data trading mechanism for distributed machine learning under network externalities;
  • Privacy mechanisms that consider jointly sensing, positioning and communications;
  • Joint optimization of communication, localization, and sensing.

The PhD positions are opened within the section on Connectivity at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University. Connectivity section carries out research in the broad area of communication engineering and networking, with special focus on communication theory and wireless systems. These positions will be established within a Villum Investigator Grant and, potentially, some of the other industrial and EU projects.

The ideal applicant must have an MSc degree in communication engineering, electronic engineering, wireless communications, statistical signal processing, machine learning, applied statistics, networking, or similar. Priority will be given to candidates who have an educational/research background on two or more of the following:

  • Wireless communication systems and networks;
  • Communication/information theory;
  • Stochastic modeling and machine learning;
  • Quantum communication and information processing;
  • Signal processing for communication, localization and sensing;
  • Security, privacy and trust, with experience in distributed ledgers or multi-party computation;
  • Network economics, game theory and data markets.

Each candidate should submit a 1-page project proposal, outlining her/his vision for a potential research project within the area of 6G and future communication systems. One or more of the following documented experience is a plus: programming, experience with complex system/link level simulators, data analysis, experimental work with embedded systems and software-defined radio, communication/signal processing for metamaterials with new electromagnetic properties.
You may obtain further information from Petar Popovski, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: +4599409897, email: petarp@es.aau.dk , concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
