Officer, Disability and Accommodations, Center for Student Well being

Reports to: Associate Director, Student Disability Services

Purpose: The job holder will be supporting all students with physical, psychological and learning disabilities, providing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant learning environment. He/she will contact and follow up on students with physical, psychological and learning disabilities; assist them in meeting the challenges of university life, and provide them with necessary support and service to lead a fruitful academic life through professional assistance.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in developing plans and initiatives and make recommendations to establish or amend policies, procedures, and practices that will facilitate services to students with disabilities
  • Contacts and follows up with students after receiving information on the student from the admissions office, establishes the kind of assistance required, facilitates the academic registration processes and coordinates with the core curriculum office any necessary support during the FYE orientation
  • Serves as on-going support and maintains frequent regular follow-up with all students with disabilities as they encounter difficulties, or simply to follow-up on progress
  • Develops an individual care plan in consultation with, and agreed by the student and coordinates services as required and as approved by the assistant director and regularly monitors and reviews care plan and services with students
  • Work in coordination with faculty through-out the academic year to facilitate special exam arrangements, secure a noise-reduced space to conduct exams, class modifications and exam dictation and so on
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in verbal and written communications and does not share student records with anyone without a justifiable purpose
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains up-to-date knowledge in the area of disability especially on international and national laws that deals with disabilities.
  • Documents, maintains and reviews current and accurate case records, notes and related information in electronic and manual files for internal and external assessment purposes; research and so on. Also, reports back any areas of newly identified risk to the associate director
  • Acts as a liaison with other units of Center for Student Wellbeing to ensure that students with disabilities receive all necessarily care to enhance their academic support such as the counseling center and coaching unit
  • Gathers and analyzes data to create monthly, quarterly, yearly reports for the associate director regarding all students with disabilities, their academic progress throughout the year and all other services of unit
  • Performs preliminary screening for students with learning disabilities
  • Perform other related tasks as requested

Requirements:

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Master in Arts in social sciences or any related field with major course work in disabilities, behavioral science or psychology

Experience:

  • 7 – 9 years of experience with previous experience working with a similar population of adolescents/young adults, including some background in working with disabilities and including working in an academic environment.

Skills:

  • Familiar with the various disability-related laws, practices and procedures
  • Familiarity with the American University in Cairo (AUC) academic system and university policies in general and policies related to disability services in particular
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to student educational and medical records.
  • Wide degree of creativity, ability to multitask, and work with a team spirit
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Skill in developing rapport and in working with students with the various range of disabilities
  • High level presentation and coaching skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English and Arabic

· Excellent computer skills
