Position Summary:

FAU Harbor Branch, located in Ft. Pierce, is a research institute focusing on marine science and oceanography with over 200 scientists, staff and students that work and study at the site. 

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Ocean Dynamics Observations and Research Field Engineer – Fort Pierce, FL.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for field research activities. This includes operating and maintaining autonomous surface and underwater vehicles, testing, integration, and deployment of oceanographic/meteorological instrumentation, mechanical assembly of buoys and mooring components, and preparation and refurbishment of autonomous aerial vehicles.

  • Perform instrument configuration set up, troubleshooting of instrument problems, assembling hardware for field experiments, and mechanical assembly of mooring platforms.

  • Participate in planning, designing, and fabricating mechanical and/or electrical components associated with purpose-built oceanographic sensors and sensing platforms.

  • Participate in oceanographic research cruises and field deployments, which will involve day trips in local waters as well as extended periods at sea. Field work activities may include working in remote environments, using small boats, working with aerial drones or autonomous oceanographic vehicles, and scuba diving. Tasks may include the management and integration of project equipment and supplies through mobilization, shipping (where required), deployment, recovery, and demobilization.

  • Prepare oceanographic and meteorological instruments for field deployments. Participate in field operations, including operations at land-based sites, fixed offshore structures, and at sea ship-based sampling.

  • Apply knowledge of established procedures to the assembly, testing, use, and maintenance of oceanographic equipment. Test equipment, calibrate instrumentation, and troubleshoot systems.

  • Fabricate and construct components of instrumentation and mooring systems such as seafloor frames. Use computer code and programs to process data and carry out basic data organization and analysis according to PI direction.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience required.
Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time required.
Ability to work in the field, including remote environments and use of small to mid-sized boats is required.
Ability to obtain FAA Part 107 remote pilot license (drone) is required.
Must have valid driver’s license and the ability to be cleared to drive required as part of job duties.
Must be able to obtain TWIC card after hire required.
Must be SCUBA certified or have the ability to become SCUBA certified after hire required.
Must be eligible to apply for US security clearance required.
Must be able to lift, push, pull up to 25 lbs required.
Preferred Skills:
Ability to program in MATLAB; programming in languages such as Labview, C++, Java, CAD, etc.
A strong willingness and interest in learning new technical skills.
The ability to communicate and work well among diverse research team with positive outlook.
Practical knowledge of technical methods, principles, and practices in oceanographic sensor and platform deployment.
Ability to work independently with a willingness to seek assistance with unusual situations which do not have clear precedents.
Ability to troubleshoot problems, often in challenging situations.
The ability to work and manage different tasks in parallel is essential and required.
Ability to effectively communicate well in a research team with diverse backgrounds is required.

Salary:

$40,000 – $70,000 per year.

Must have flexibility to work outside of regular hours for fieldwork and travel up to 50% of the time.
