Job Summary
NOTE: This position is eligible for a $10,000 sign on bonus for new hires
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Pediatric Cancer program treats all types of childhood cancers including those of the blood, brain, soft-tissue and bone. This Nurse Practitioner (NP) position is primarily focused on outpatient care of pediatric patients with leukemia and lymphoma. Under the direct supervision of the APP Manager and the pediatric leukemia team director, the NP in this position will be responsible for providing continuity of care for their patients via the following components.
1) Independent care in care in clinic is a defining feature of the NP role. The NP will see patients independently 2 clinic sessions per week.
2) Shared visits allow for continuity of care. The NP will see patients with the primary attending and/or fellow 2 clinic sessions per week.
3) Procedures including bone marrows and lumbar punctures are an integral component of leukemia care. The NP will perform BM/LPs either in the operating room under anesthesia or awake in clinic for patients that prefer that approach.
4) Phase 1 trials are a critical aspect of providing high-level care to relapsed leukemia patients. The NP will evaluate and treat ALL, AML, MDS, JMML, HLH, LCH and lymphoma patients with the primary attending and/or fellow as part of early phase clinical trials.
5) CAR-T therapy is now standard of care for relapsed leukemia/lymphoma. The NP will evaluate and treat patients with CAR-T cells which includes organizing apheresis, bridging therapy, infusion, follow-up and managing CAR-T related complications.
6) Teaching is a critical component of the NP role and education of residents/fellows as well as nursing staff will be expected.
7) Participation in the weekly leukemia tumor board and every other week CRC leukemia meeting is expected.
8) Oversight and arranging of primary patient visits, labs, and scans in collaboration with fellows and attendings is under the purview of the NP.
9) Development of standard operating procedures in collaboration with attendings/fellows as needed to provide a high level of care to our patients.
While this position is primarily outpatient in nature, leukemia/lymphoma patients are frequently inpatient and this position will require flexibility to accommodate the exact location of the patient. The NP will be expected to attend and participate in all consent conferences (new diagnosis, significant events, treatment, trial enrollment, etc.). regardless of the location. The NP is therefore expected to be physically present at Mission Bay 4 days per week with 1 day being remote if desired.
All of the above requirements are specifically designed to allow for the NP to be the primary point person for their patients and ensure that continuity of care can be delivered if the primary attending and/or fellow are not available. The NP is a critical member of the primary team and will be viewed as an equal member in terms of decision making and responsibilities.
Eligibility for Sign On Bonus – Candidate cannot be a current UC employee. Candidate cannot have been employed by the University during the 12 months prior to the proposed rehire date. Candidate position classification cannot be Senior Management Group (SMG). Candidate must meet any additional UC location eligibility requirements.
