Hull York Medical School, University of Hull seeks to appoint an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Vascular or General Surgery, based within the Academic Vascular Surgical Unit (AVSU) at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual wishing to excel in both their clinical and academic training, with the ambition to join the next generation of world-leading academic clinicians.  

Applications are now invited for an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Vascular Surgery or General Surgery within the Academic Training Programme. This new post has been created as part of the National Co-ordinating Centre for Research Capacity (NIHRTCC) programme of Integrated Academic Training and offers candidates a comprehensive experience of clinical academic surgery, working alongside internationally renowned clinicians and researchers.  Applicants for this post must have an existing NTN (or be clinically benchmarked) and be at ST3 level or above and must hold a higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) with a focus on endovenous, peripheral arterial or wounds related research.

The Academic Lecturer will continue clinical training at 50% whole time equivalent rate within the Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber.  The appointee will participate in the regional training programme in the Health Education Yorkshire and Humber School of Surgery. As training in surgery is 5+ years, an additional period of dedicated clinical training may be required, either before or after the Clinical Lectureship. The successful applicant will work with the Training Programme Director and Academic Lead to develop a configuration of research to clinical training conducive to both progression and academic output.

This post will be based at the AVSU, Hull Royal Infirmary.  The AVSU was established 20 years ago and collaborates with some of the strongest departments within the University of Hull including: Clinical Biosciences Institute; Centre for Medical Engineering & Technology; Department of Biological Sciences; Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science. It has close links with the Hull York Medical School, Department of Health Sciences, University of York, Clinical Departments in the NHS and to industry. The AVSU staff include; 10 consultant vascular surgeons (1 Professor & 2 Senior Lecturers); 8 consultant interventional radiologists; 4 Specialist Registrars; 3 ACFs, 1 core surgical trainee; 4 FY1 doctors; 3 vascular technicians / sonographers; 5 specialist / research nurses; 5 research fellows. Facilities include fully equipped vascular laboratory (4 ultrasound scanners, plethysmography equipment; treadmills; cardiopulmonary exercise testing); access to CT, MRA, combined procedures and interventional radiology suites. 

The AVSU has a proven track record in peer review publication, successful grant applications, and supervision of successful MD, MSc, BSc & PGCert students.

All candidates will need to hold full GMC registration with a license to practice at the time of appointment.

Applicants for this NIHR Clinical Lecturer need to either hold a current National Training Number (NTN) for the speciality, or be able to clinically benchmark to be able to take up the post. Clinical benchmarking can be achieved through application for the relevant specialty training within the national recruitment window where the minimal appointable score must be achieved.

All applicants who do not already hold a National Training Number (NTN) or Deanery Reference Number (DRN) in the GMC specialty to which they are applying for will be required to undertake the national clinical recruitment process and attend an assessment/interview for that GMC specialty as appropriate.

The employment contract will be with the University of Hull.

Applicants must be able to take up the appointment before March 2023.
