The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Law Division is the lead Division charged with carrying out the functions of UNEP in the field of environmental law, environmental governance and related policy issues including those related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). The Law Division promotes the contribution of the environmental dimension of sustainable development through law, national and international governance and related policy issues, including those related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). This position is located in the Law Division’s Environmental Conventions and Policy Branch at UNEP’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Environmental Conventions and Policy Branch and perform the following duties:
Responsibilities
• Develop, implement and evaluate assigned programmes/projects, ; monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions. •Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. •Coordinate activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, donor reports etc.). • Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources. • Coordinate policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies. • Generate survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions. • Organize and prepare written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies and inputs to publications. • Provide substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations. • Initiate and coordinate outreach activities; conduct training workshops, seminars,; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. • Lead and/or participate in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and draft mission summaries. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Perform other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental law, project management, economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with in combination with an additional two (2) years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management and administration in the field of environment is required. Work experience in international and national environmental governance and relations is desirable. Experience in the UN system or other international organization is desirable. A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French language is desirable. NOTE: ”Fluency” equals a rating of ”fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ”Knowledge of” equals a rating of ”confident” in two of the four area.

This position is temporarily available until 27 June 2025. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
