SCOPE OF WORK:
The IRC Phoenix New Roots Program’s focus is to help newly arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and navigate their new food systems. The New Roots Food Access Intern will assist IRC staff in outreach, recruitment and facilitation of the Nutrition Education Food Access program (NEFA), Navigating a New Food System (NNFS) program, as well as operation of the New Roots Farm Stand at Camel Backyard.
Minimum Qualifications:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Outreach, recruit, and enroll eligible clients for the NEFA and NNFS programs
Facilitate NEFA classes at the IRC office with appropriate language interpretation
Facilitate interactive NNFS workshops at CamelBackyard Community Food Hub
Administer client surveys
Assist IRC staff with data collection
Conduct outreach and provide food access resources to IRC clients and the community
Assist New Roots staff in managing the Farm Stand at CamelBackyard
Coordinate with New Roots growers to aggregate produce
Assist growers in market exploration
Support community engagement and educational activities
Assist the New Roots program with ongoing program tasks as needed
LEARNING OUTCOMES: The intern will develop the following skills:
Foster outreach skills in working withpredominantly non-English speaking populations
Build communication skills while engaging with customers, community members, and growers
Develop a working knowledge of how to assist refugee clients in learning about the American food system
Implement logistical planning and time management skills in a dynamic environment
Design curriculum to expand client mastery of the “Navigating a New Food System” program
Learn how to operate a farm stand including advertising, produce aggregation, customer logistics, and marketing strategies
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree or coursework in local food systems, community development, nutrition, public health or other related field.
Demonstrated experience in community engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities and related to food access or nutrition, preferred.
Prior experience teaching or facilitating workshops/trainings preferred.
Prior experience working with refugees, immigrant or pre-literate populations in non-traditional setting preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills required.
A flexible schedule and ability to travel to various offsite locations preferred.
Second language a plus.
