Job Description


Resettlement is at the heart of the IRC’s work with refugees. Services provided meet refugees’ basic needs for food, shelter and legal rights in the early, critical stages of the long-term resettlement process. All activities lay the foundation for clients to become self-sufficient and contribute positively to their new community. The Youth Education Interns will assist the Youth Education department in supporting refugee and asylee children, and meet their short-term and long-term education goals.

This is a hybrid position, with opportunities to be online and in-person.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate intern to join our team as a Youth Education and Tutoring Intern. In this role, you will work closely with our Youth Education Specialists, School Success Specialists, and other interns to support the educational needs of newly arrived youth. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with refugee populations and to learn about the refugee experience as it pertains to education and English language development.

General Responsibilities:

●      Assist in organizing and facilitating after-school tutoring and academic support programming to refugee youth, focusing on areas such as English language skills, math, and other subjects as needed.

○      You are required to attend and facilitate at least 3 tutoring sessions per week. Tutoring sessions are held after K-12 school hours from 4:00PM – 6:30PM Tuesday-Friday, and hybrid sessions Saturdays from 11:00AM – 1:00PM.

○      You are expected to be available on Saturdays from 10:00AM – 3:00PM in-person at the IRC office for tutoring sessions and community events that day. This is included in your 3 sessions per week.

●      Track and document all activities related to youth education and tutoring in the appropriate internal database system.

●      Facilitate one Professional Development session for staff and volunteers.

There are 7 intern positions available for 4 different roles under the Youth Education Intern title. All Youth Education Interns are still expected to fulfill all outlined responsibilities in this section. These roles will be decided once all interns are onboarded.

  ○      Curriculum Intern (3 positions) responsible for:

■      Organizing and assisting with creation of the curriculum and daily lesson plans for the tutoring sessions and the associated tutor curriculum guide

■      Assisting with creation of knowledge assessments for students based on the curriculum

■      Researching and organizing additional resources provided to tutors

■      Overseeing tutors using the curriculum to observe the potential improvements

○      Tutor Oversight Intern (1 position) responsible for:

■      Reaching out to organizations and educational facilities to recruit volunteer tutors

■      Assisting with creation and facilitation of volunteer training

■      Ensuring volunteers complete all training materials by the given deadlines

■      Scheduling and communicating with volunteers

■      Assisting in facilitating the Tutor Monthly Check-ins with the Youth Education Specialist

○      Student and Family Engagement Intern (1 position) responsible for:

■      Assisting the Youth Education Specialist with facilitation of Monitoring and Evaluation materials

■      Contacting families and caregivers of students to remind them of tutoring or community events via an IRC Whatsapp number

■      Partnering with Programming Intern to ensure consistent communication to families about Community Events

■      Potentially assisting the Operations Team with the Youth Education Newsletter

○      Programming Intern (2 positions) responsible for:

■      Communicating with outside organizations to partner with for tutor Professional Development sessions and Saturday Community Events

■      Scheduling and preparing Professional Development sessions and Community Events

■      Partnering with SF Engagement Intern to ensure consistent communication to families about Community Events

■      Partnering with other Youth Education Interns to organize and facilitate ESOL classes for parents and caregivers during Saturday in-person programming

■      Documentation of all Community Events and Professional Development

All interns must:

●      Complete and submit all trainings and professional development by deadline, as assigned.

●      Uphold and promote policies and practices necessary to create a linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, trauma-informed learning environment.

●      Uphold all IRC and program and child safeguarding policies and directives.

●      Work and communicate with IRC staff and volunteers as needed.

●      Complete assigned surveys and data tracking tasks, as assigned.

●      Complete and submit a weekly timesheet on Salesforce platform to track and codify IRC volunteer hours.

●      Additional related duties as assigned.

Learning Objectives:

●      Supporting volunteers and facilitating general educational programming within non-profit organizations.

●      Facilitate professional development opportunities for volunteers.

●      Gain hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after their arrival in the U.S.

●      Acquire skills in tracking and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data related to refugee learning outcomes.

●      Enhance cross-cultural communication skills and learn to navigate difficult conversations with clients from diverse backgrounds.

●      Gain familiarity with the U.S. educational system and develop strategies for supporting refugee youth within it.

Minimum Qualifications:Qualifications:
●      Current undergraduate or graduate student, or recent graduate.
●      Experience or strong interest in working with refugee and immigrant communities.
●      Punctuality, excellent time management skills, and a flexible schedule.
●      Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
●      Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client information.
●      Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
●      Strong attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision.
●      Office and administration experience is a plus, but training will be provided.
●      Strong intercultural communication skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds.
●      Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Mandingo, Pashto, Russian, Spanish, Tigrinya, Ukrainian, Wolof)
●      All offers are contingent on successfully passing background and criminal history checks as required by federal and state law or by IRC policy.

Commitment:
·       Minimum of 15 hours per week for 16 weeks.
·       Primary availability during IRC business hours (Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 6:00pm).
·       Preference will be given to applicants able to make a multi-term commitment.
·       Start date: September 2nd, 2024
·       End date: December 20th, 2024
