Information Technology (IT) invites applications for a Network Support Technician to oversee designing and installing well-functioning computer networks and systems. This includes installing computer and network infrastructure, racking and cabling equipment, managing rack space, and routing and pulling electronic cabling (e.g., copper, fiber, and other telecommunications related media). The position also participates in troubleshooting system failures and performing service solutions. In addition, the Network Support Technician will work with contractors, vendors and university staff to plan and perform annual maintenance, monitor security cameras and manage access to equipment located in controlled areas.

The Network Support Technician position requires an active and organized person capable of communicating clearly with vendors, contractors and campus personnel at all levels – students, faculty, staff and administration. Additionally, occasional work outside standard business hours is required for system monitoring, maintenance, and repair. This position is designed to advance to Net/Comp Sys Administrator II & III (via Career Ladder adjustments) as greater ability, knowledge, skills, and experience are attained.

The position will not have direct reports. However, the Network Support Technician may monitor and supervise work performed by staff assigned to networking projects, as well as vendors and contractors accessing areas of interest.

This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge of relevant UM Standards, policies, procedures and regulations. This individual will also gain the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.

 
Required Skills:

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate with team members, auxiliary staff, vendors and customers to exchange ideas, information and instructions in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to take personal responsibility for identifying and resolving complex problems while demonstrating good judgment and decision-making
  • Time management and organization skills necessary to implement multiple and concurrent campus-wide projects, such as installation and maintenance of network, voice, video, telepresence, and computing equipment
  • Ability to provide hands-on support for university networks, operational systems, and data centers on a daily basis, with occasional calls for working outside of normal hours/days
  • Skill and physical abilities to perform installations of inter- and intra- building copper, fiber, coax cable, as well as assembly and racking of network and server equipment on an as needed basis
  • Knowledge of cable and low voltage systems (e.g., twisted pair, coax, power limited tray, stranded, solid conductor low voltage, Category 5/6, single and multi -mode fiber optic cables, etc.)
  • Capable of troubleshooting low voltage systems utilizing wiring schematics, computer software, and diagnostic equipment
  • Ability to help design network infrastructure that complies with UM and industry standards, which includes outside plant cable and cable pathways
  • Ability to monitor data center facilities and systems according to well defined monitoring and reporting procedures
  • Availability to work outside of normal working hours (weekends, holidays, etc.) to support critical university systems as needed

 
Physical Requirements:

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation).

  • Ability to safely access, install, and modify campus infrastructure. This includes:
    • Lifting/ moving equipment and objects weighing 50-80 lbs.
    • Ability to safely work from ladders and in tight spaces
    • Possess the hand, finger, and eye coordination needed for using trade tools
    • Ability to perform repetitive motions (e.g., shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands) often required during cabling projects

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.

 
Minimum Required Experience:

  • High School diploma and at least one (1) year work experience with the following:
    • Testing, verifying, and troubleshooting low voltage electronics with industry standard testing equipment
    • General electronic equipment maintenance (e.g., switch gear, servers, etc.)
    • Automated control systems (e.g., room temp control, fire, UPS systems, etc.)
    • Understanding and working within construction standards and codes
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

IT at UM is a campus service organization that provides computing and communication resources in support of the instructional, research, administrative, and public service activities of UM. IT maintains and operates complex information systems to support the University’s administrative activities and offers a variety of technology support services to assist the University in using the resources and services that IT is responsible for providing.

This Network Support Technician position is under UM IT’s Cyberinfrastructure unit and reports to a Project Management lead, who reports to the Director of Cyberinfrastructure, who reports to the Chief Information Officer.
