Net zero, sustainability and international trade from a developing country perspective (Ref: LB25-HE-BG-unfunded)

We are seeking exceptional PhD candidates with a strong interest in net zero policies, sustainability, and international trade, particularly from a developing country perspective. This project aims to examine how the phased adoption of net zero policies by leading advanced economies impacts developing countries. Key questions include whether these policies lead to carbon leakage, where developing countries may delay or avoid net zero commitments to gain economic advantages from carbon-intensive trade, and whether such dynamics pose risks to the stability of the international trading system through potential retaliatory measures by advanced economies.

The project will utilise state-of-the-art trade modelling techniques, combining export quality measures and gravity models. The research focuses on whether environmentally sustainable exports from developing countries generate sufficient economic rewards to incentivize compliance with international sustainability goals, thereby minimizing the need for retaliatory measures by environmentally committed developed countries.

We are particularly interested in candidates who excel in combining rigorous empirical research with an in-depth understanding of developing economies. An interest in exploring the complex interactions between trade and sustainability economics is essential. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a highly impactful research area addressing critical challenges at the intersection of global trade and climate policy.

Entry requirements

At least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) with a UK master’s degree (with an average programme mark of no less than 65%) or international equivalent.

English language requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements. Loughborough Business School requires a minimum IELTS band 7.0 or above with not less than 7.0 in each component. Further details are available on the international website.

Tuition fees for 2025-26 entry
