Description
Two Natural Resources Technicians (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) positions are available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). These positions will provide support to the natural resources program at Joint Base Charleston (JBC), South Carolina. Successful candidates will gain hands-on experience on a range of natural resource and wildlife management projects. Experience gained will be a valuable tool to anyone wishing to grow in their career in Natural Resources Management. Responsibilities
The Natural Resources Technicians will provide support to JBC’s Natural Resources Manager on a variety of natural resource and wildlife management projects. These projects include managing stands of long leaf pines, removing invasive plants, monitoring local eagle nests to assess their activity and productivity, and maintaining nest boxes, tree nurseries, and dams and dikes. The technicians also may assist with prescribed fire operations, depending on their qualifications. Once technicians are hired, safety training for operating ATVs and chainsaws may be provided. Almost all work will be conducted outdoors and entail working either alongside other technicians/managers and/or independently, as necessary. The physical requirements of these positions, as described below, are demanding, but they will provide an excellent variety of work experiences in natural resources maintenance and management that should prove invaluable for those seeking careers in natural resources.

Position Duty Station: Joint Base Charleston
Joint Base Charleston (JBC) is a 23,000-acre United States military installation, 10,000 acres of which remain undeveloped. This undeveloped area is used primarily for ordnance storage and military training and secondarily for timber management and outdoor recreation. The JBC Natural and Cultural Resource program is a multi-faceted, award-winning operation that manages and protects the base’s natural and cultural resources, as required by state and federal law and DoD policies, and it operates under the JBC’s Integrated Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plan. Key areas of environmental focus include endangered species management, wetlands protection, wildland fire, invasive species control, outdoor recreation, timber management, wildlife management, and other special projects.

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Pay Rate
Pay rate is $30,000 – $33,000 annual, not to exceed 12 months and/or 1400 hours.

Essential Job Duty Categories
• Field work – Manages stands of long leaf pines, removes invasive plants, monitors local eagle nests to assess their activity and productivity, and maintains nest boxes, tree nurseries, and dams and dikes. Assists with prescribed fire operations. This will take place 90% of the time.
• Reporting – Develop text and graphics to include in project summary reports. This will take place 10% of the time.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• B.S. degree in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, or ecosystem science-related field.
• Must be physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations for long periods of time under varying weather conditions. Field activities may include, but not be limited to, pruning trees, clearing brush, restringing fences, and handling maintenance tools and equipment. These actions will require constant walking, lifting, kneeling, and pulling.
• Must be able to pass the wildland firefighter pack test, if you do not already possess a Red Card.
• Must be able to operate federal vehicles, including cars and ATVs.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience using a chainsaw and other mechanical tools.
• Wildland Firefighter Red Card
• Chainsaw Certification
• Experience operating an ATV
