Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) mission is to preserve, protect, and perpetuate fish, wildlife, and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities.

This position works independently in the field to complete several technical tasks to implement the management plan for the Skagit Wildlife Area. These tasks range from monitoring and management of habitat to recreational access infrastructure.

In this dynamic role, you will use photo points and regular site visits to monitor long-term changes to vegetation in response to treatments.

With your experience, you will monitor and assess field and vegetation conditions to determine appropriate implement use and timing of work.

DUTIES

Our Skagit Wildlife Area Technician,

Operates tractors (55 hp – 135 hp) and various agricultural implements (offset and tandem disks, 3-point disk, chisel plow, cultivator, roll-over plow, cultipacker, spin-spreader, grain drill, rotary mower, flail mower, and boom sprayer) to prepare soil, mow, and spray waterfowl forage crops and other vegetation.
Provides input to produce a yearly planting plan using principles of crop rotation and knowledge of site characteristics gathered through site inspections.
Coordinates project tasks with other WDFW personnel and volunteers and direct the work of volunteers to complete projects.
Independently operates and performs preventative and routine maintenance and repairs on all equipment and tools, including hydraulic and engine oil changes, lubrication, change or clean filters, drive belts, and bearings to ensure proper operation.
Maintains buildings and facilities to include shop, office, residence, interpretive center, pheasant pens, boathouse and moorage facility, roads, trails, fences, footbridges, water control structures, boat launch, and hunting and wildlife viewing blinds.
Mows, performs weed control, parking area and road grading/maintenance, and litter removal at Wildlife Area access sites.
Installs and maintains interpretive signs, kiosks, reader boards, and round-rail fences.
Uses Integrated Pest Management principles to treat weeds and other vegetation using chemical, cultural, and mechanical methods. Identifies species, assess condition, and determine timing and method of treatment.
Mixes and sprays herbicides and adjuvants and apply using backpack and tractor-mounted boom sprayers.
Maintains herbicide and pesticide application records and complete and submit annual weed control reports.
Maintains a valid Washington State Department of Agriculture Public Operator Pesticide Applicator License by regularly attending recertification training to earn continuing education credits.
Implements and monitors agricultural and habitat enhancement projects.
Plans, implements, and monitors agricultural leases.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work Setting, including hazards:
Work in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and sticky mud.
Walk, bend, stoop, while at times carrying up to 40 pounds
Load and transport equipment and gear.
Perform routine and repetitive work.

Schedule:
8 hrs. per day, Monday through Friday.
Odd, unusual, and sometimes additional hours per week based on business needs.

Travel Requirements:
Limited overnight travel.

Tools and Equipment:
Safely operate different types of tractors, implements, boats and other equipment.

Customer Interactions:
Frequently communicate with public in a professional manner.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years of experience as a Natural Resource Technician 2, Forest Technician, Engineering Aide 1, Administrative Assistant 1 or higher class performing technical or paraprofessional duties, relating to land use, transaction lease, or development.

Or

Three (3) years of experience as a general repairer or equivalent.

Or

Bachelor’s degree with major study in business management, accounting, real estate, agriculture, aquatic land studies, police sciences, or other business, law enforcement, or natural resource studies.

Or

Associate degree in natural resource, law enforcement, or business studies and two (2) years of technical experience in land management.

Licenses:
Valid driver’s license.
Obtain Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of employment (training provided).

Ability to:
Negotiate water in emergency situations.

Training:
Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.

Experience:
Following oral and written directions.
Working independently and as a team member.
Performing in a punctual and dependable manner.
