Job Summary
The Resource Curation Manager will be responsible for leading the development of a long-term strategy for UBC that will inform the design of information seeking infrastructure and pedagogical and research practices with Musqueam. The person in this position will lead a university wide needs assessment with key stakeholders, informing future organizational and professional practices in alignment with Musqueam’s goals, vision and existing agreements with the UBC. This position will inform a multi-year strategy that will determine the design and functionality of an online educational portal (Musqueam Information Portal) for existing Musqueam resources, and how best to manage and support information requests. The development of such a portal will a) broaden the campus knowledge base about Musqueam history and its contemporary relationship with UBC and b) reduce the high volume of requests for information coming from UBC units for Musqueam engagement. This work will be developed in partnership with relevant groups from across the Vancouver campus and representatives from Musqueam. The work performed will be developed in alignment with the commitments detailed in UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan.
This position will work closely with a team of institutional partners (CTLT Indigenous Initiatives, X wi7x wa Library, the iSchool [School of Information] and Campus and Community Planning [C&CP]) as well as part-time student staff (Graduate Work Learns and Graduate Academic Assistants) from the iSchool who are currently identifying existing educational and informational resources relevant to Musqueam along with information needs that are commonly requested by UBC faculty, students and staff.
Organizational Status
This position will report to the Sr. Strategist for Indigenous Initiatives (II) in CTLT. Situated within the CTLT’s Teaching, Learning and Professional Development (TLPD) portfolio, CTLT Indigenous Initiatives offers programming, academic resources, consultations, and support focused on Indigenous engagement in curriculum, pedagogy, classroom climate, and professional development. CTLT Indigenous Initiatives works with Indigenous community partners such as Musqueam, as well as UBC faculty, staff, and students to evaluate, develop, and bridge expertise around initiatives committed to improving classroom climate and campus environments conducive to student success, and to strengthening local capacity to conduct effective approaches to teaching and learning in this area.
In addition to collaborating with other members of the II team, TLPD and CTLT staff, this position will be part of project teams involving partner units such as Xwi7xwa Library, C&CP and the iSchool with the guidance of members of Musqueam. This position will therefore require extensive contact with representatives of these units, in addition to staff at Musqueam, as well as other UBC faculties, administrative units, and faculty, staff, and student stakeholders across the university.
This position will work collaboratively and strategically with all project partners and will guide the further design and project development for resources and services available to members of the UBC teaching, learning, and professional communities as well as users of UBC resources.
Work Performed
Develop long-term institutional plans that will inform ongoing efforts to create culturally competent resources, educational programs and services, attending to knowledge gaps in historical, contemporary, and institutional relationships with Musqueam.
Lead development and dissemination of high-level reports and project updates to various stakeholders; including Musqueam and Senior Leadership at UBC.
Lead a resource curation plan including conceptualization and recommendations for its implementation, along with development of budgets, and resource allocations to ensure the delivery of resources.
Conduct needs assessment with key university stakeholders and Musqueam that will inform future delivery of educational programming and professional development across UBC
Lead the design of the infrastructure for the resources and content, engaging with academic units (CTLT, X wi7x wa Library, etc.) as well as operational units (UBC Brand & Marketing, Communications, UBC Studios, etc.) to ensure resources are widely available across campus (e.g., resource materials, video, language resources, communication tools (fonts), etc.)
Analysis of recommendations from needs assessment, which will be used to develop the resource curation plan
Liaise with project partners of other units closely connected with Musqueam to review the recommendations and to discuss other initiatives and opportunities to be included in long-term plans
Maintain collaborative relationships with staff, faculty and departments involved in related projects
Work in alignment with the commitments detailed in UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan
Other duties as assigned
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires familiarity with communication and consultation processes and protocols in working with Indigenous faculty, staff, students, and community members. A lack of familiarity with these processes and protocols could result in dysfunctional or ineffective understandings and approaches, which could perpetuate problematic situations and negatively impact students, work colleagues, and others. Errors in judgment may damage the reputation of the University and its relationship with Musqueam. The person in this position must exercise a high level of professionalism and judgment when dealing with various units and departments, as well as with non-UBC colleagues, specifically Musqueam. Failure to follow best practices and exercise sound judgment could have a negative impact on future internal and external partnerships with Musqueam.
Supervision Received
The Project Manager will work independently with general direction from Sr. Strategist at Indigenous Initiatives (CTLT). Supervision and direction provided through a combination of verbal and written instructions. Work is reviewed for attainment of objectives, effectiveness of results and soundness of judgment.
Supervision Given
