JOB SUMMARY
The Coordinator, Multicultural Student Programs is a professional staff member of Hamline University’s Center for Hedgeman Center for Student Diversity Initiatives and Programs. To better serve and retain students, Center staff, services and initiatives help create a campus community where the needs of students of color are addressed and where multiculturalism and diversity are appreciated, celebrated and advanced. Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Students and in accordance with the mission of the office, the Coordinator is responsible for creating programs, initiatives, services and partnerships that support, assist, and empower students of color at Hamline.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, coordinate and implement outreach activities, programs and services to support and increase retention of students of color, including Multicultural Mosaic Pathway (a pre-orientation program), Student Empowerment Retreat, and Student Transition Enrichment Programs (STEPs);
- Advise, counsel, mentor, and provide related support services for individual students concerning personal, cultural, academic, co-curricular and transition issues, including students who are experiencing academic challenges at the university;
- Advise student of color organizations and assist with the leadership development of organizations;
- Facilitate the leadership development, active engagement and participation of students of in the University community;
- Develop, coordinate and implement programs and activities that will increase awareness, knowledge and skills related to the needs, concerns and issues facing students and communities of color, including traditional awareness weeks and months, Social Justice Symposium, This is My Story Conversation Series, and/or the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration;
- Develop collaborative partnerships and assist others in offering support to students of color and first generation college students;
- Serve as a resource and ally for students and issues of diversity and multiculturalism;
- Assist, collaborate with and serve as a resource for members of the University community in promoting a campus climate which is inclusive and supportive of students of color, first generation students, diversity, inclusion and social justice;
- Serve on committees that support students and the missions of the Hedgeman Center and Hamline University as assigned; and
- Other duties as assigned by Associate Dean of Students.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students/ Director of the Hedgeman Center
This position supervises 1-2 student workers.
BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES
- Understanding of student development theories and diversity education.
- Ability to coach, provide feedback, and guide others.
- Skills and abilities to develop and organize programming that will increase understanding of and sensitivity to the needs, concerns and issues facing students and communities of color
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and computer skills.
- Ability to work with a wide range of people within the university setting, including administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.
- Experience and sensitivity working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, conveying complex information in a manner that others can understand, as well as the ability to understand and interpret information from others.
- Ability, flexibility and willingness to frequently work some evenings and weekends
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/EXPECTATIONS
- Earned Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, or similar area of study from an accredited university or college.
- Three (3) years professional experience developing programming and support services targeting diverse students in a college or university.
- Three (3) years professional experience coordinating events or event management.
- Three (3) years professional experience with advising students and/or student organizations.
- A valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/EXPECTATIONS
- Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Counseling or similar area of study.
- Five (5) years professional experience developing programming targeting diverse students in a college or university.
- Five (5) years professional experience coordinating events or event management.
- Five (5) years professional experience working with diverse students in a college/university setting.
- Five (5) years professional experience advising students and/or student organizations.
- Experience with budget management.
- Bilingual in English and at least one of the following languages: Arabic, Hmong, Vietnamese, Somali, Spanish, or other language.
