Job Summary:

The School of Journalism and Mass Communications’ Mass Communication Research Center (MCRC) and the Center for Communication and Civic Renewal (CCCR) bring together researchers, industry leaders, and practitioners to produce cutting-edge research and engage in research-oriented graduate education in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It houses multiple and provides resources for the study of mass communication content, effects, and dynamics. A collaborative orientation, joint research projects, open participation, student direction, and faculty mentoring characterize the approach of all affiliated groups.
This position provides leadership in planning, coordinating and managing all operations of the CCCR’s research, training and education mission, especially as it relates to the National Science Foundation’s Convergence Accelerator grant to develop Course Correct, a digital dashboard that serves as a tool to help mitigate misinformation flow on social media platforms. Responsibilities include budget, purchasing and contract management, program management, public-facing writing, promotion, assistance with human subjects research compliance, policy analysis and development, fostering internal and external relationships, grant management, directing media communications, coordination of publishing and fund raising efforts. This position reports to Professor Michael W. Wagner.

Responsibilities: Manages research administration activities from proposal preparation through closeout on behalf of a unit. Reviews and approves proposal submissions, contract negotiations, project setups, compliance, and/or financial reporting. Develops and oversees implementation of operations and strategic planning to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements within a school/college/division/unit. May manage a programmatic unit and/or personnel.

  • 30% Executes research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance on behalf of a unit
  • 10% Reviews and approves programmatic transactions spanning the life-cycle of sponsored projects to ensure compliance with institutional and/or sponsor policies and procedures
  • 5% May supervise the day-to-day activities of research administration staff
  • 5% Serves as a key resource to leadership and staff in the unit as well as a liaison to partners and stakeholders
  • 10% Executes activities related to proposal submission, contract negotiation, and/or award setup on behalf of a unit
  • 10% Executes activities related to financial compliance, audit, or reporting on behalf of a unit
  • 5% Provides training to faculty, staff, and/or administrators within the unit regarding policy, procedure, and/or execution of sponsored project administration
  • 5% May have authority to submit proposals, agreements, or invoices to a sponsor on behalf of the principal investigator or project director
  • 20% Provides administrative support to the NSF Convergence Accelerator Grant, Phase II and associated grants from entities such as the Knight Foundation. This activity is under the direction of Professor Michael W. Wagner.

Education:

Required
Bachelor’s Degree in related field is required. Postgraduate degree is preferred.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
– Previous administrative experience
– Experience writing, reviewing, and/or managing grants
Preferred Qualifications:
– Previous experience in higher education administration.
– Previous involvement in administration of research programs or research related activities in an academic environment.
– Experience with program, budgetary, regulatory, and compliance requirements of major funding agencies (i.e., Federal, State, Private, and University System); and current knowledge of funding agencies’ policies and procedures.
– Direct experience with social scientific research grants, project management, research grant pre- and post-award, contracts, and sponsored research.
Skills and Abilities:
– Effective oral and written communication skills.
– Independent problem solving and analytical skills.
– Strong skills in leadership, organization, prioritization, and training.
– An outgoing and energetic service-oriented approach.
– Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, university administrators and funding agency representatives.
– The ability to be flexible in work assignments; ability to meet deadlines; independent problem solving and analytical abilities.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 24 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding

Salary:

Minimum $67,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for the position is $67,000. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
