MSD Data Science Intern


Job Description

Several thousand patients and millions of molecular and clinical data points at your fingertip.

The MSD Musculoskeletal Disease Area is seeking a talented postgraduate candidate to perform exploratory analytics and multi-omics data mining on musculoskeletal disease samples towards novel pathomechanisms, endotypes and biomarkers.

Your responsibilities
As part of the data science team and in collaboration with our translational experts, you will quantitatively explore and model osteoarthritis (OA) patient endotypes and disease state biomarkers using RNAseq, scRNAseq and proteomics from OA joint tissues, as well as build data visualization tools to enable NIBR researchers to leverage your results. You will further work to integrate data from public databases with your results.

Minimum experience:
• Proficient in R programming, with good knowledge of statistical data modeling
• Hands on experience in some type of genomics data analysis (e.g. RNAseq or scRNAseq etc.)
• Experience with using data visualization such as ggplot2
• Some experience working in Unix/Linux and HPC environment
• High learning agility, developed scientific curiosity and a desire to make a difference for patients
• Solution-based approach to problem-solving
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, recognized as a team player and ready to take the initiative

Preferred Experience:
• Experience in RShiny and Rmarkdown html reports
• Experience in querying databases (e.g. SQL in R)
• Experience in analyzing scRNAseq and spatial transcriptomics

Timing: expected start date early 2023.
Duration: 4-6 months

Minimum Requirements

• Recent MSc graduate or currently enrolled in a MSc program, in computational biology, bioinformatics or data science (some biology knowledge is strongly preferred)
• Proficiency in English, both spoken and written
