Job Summary Under the direction of the Office of Sustainability leadership, the Motor Vehicle Operator for Waste and Recycling is primarily responsible for implementing UWM’s self-haul recycling program, including planning daily/weekly program logistics, collecting and processing recyclable materials from across the UWM campus, and coordinating paper commodities services. Operates large trucks and heavy equipment to collect, transport, and consolidate several waste and recycling streams from the institution while ensuring environmental compliance. This is semi-skilled work requiring significant autonomy, prioritization of tasks, and monitoring changes in service level needs. Supports other departmental programs as directed, including supporting Surplus metal and e-waste collection and recycling.
This position performs all duties in a professional manner, with an emphasis on customer service, interacting with multiple departments, colleagues, and the public daily while serving as a model representative of the Office of Sustainability.
This is a 1st shift position, Monday – Friday (7:30AM – 4:00PM)
Starting salary range, depending on experience: $17-19/hour
Minimum Qualifications Applicants for this vacancy must:
  • Willingness to drive a box truck and forklift
  • Willingness to work in a range of environments, such as warehouse, office, and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Evidence of ability to stand, walk, push, pull, and sit for extended periods of time
  • Evidence of ability to frequently handle and lift heavy objects, up to 50 lbs. at a time
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver license (or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation) and be able to meet or exceed the minimum requirements for driving on state business as detailed here: https://uwm.edu/risk-management/drivers/
Preferred Qualifications Highly qualified candidates will also have:
  • Demonstrated experience using forklifts, compactors, and balers, or similar equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in recycling and waste diversion
  • Evidence of ability to maintain a safe, clean, and positive work environment and to occasionally work under pressure or in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated customer service experience
  • Ability to occasionally work weekends or maintain a flexible schedule, such as for our annual Move-Out program (usually during late May)
