MIN250 – Communication Module

Course description: Operational aspects of open pit mine design and mine planning. Topics will include: open pit design and pit optimization; long term and short term planning considerations; materials handling; equipment selection and optimization; industrial minerals production; mine safety and mine regulations; mining and the environment; mine personnel organization; ethics and professional issues. Pit dewatering, the location and stability of waste dumps and an examination of equipment cost and production statistics are also included.

Class schedule: Monday 3-5, Tuesday 1-2pm

Sessional dates of appointment:  December 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023.

Hours: 0.5 HCE (up to a maximum of 115 hrs)

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 – $8,489.67; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term – $8,869.25; Sessional Lecturer 2 – $9,085.58; and Sessional Lecturer 3 – $9,301.90. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:  include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications: include experience teaching in Civil Engineering communication courses (especially CIV282 and 382).  A PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and experience as an instructor in a first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice or Praxis is also desirable.  

Description of duties: 

  • Planning and delivering up to six one 1-hour classes over the term, schedule TBD
  • Developing, supporting, and assessing one written and one group oral presentation assignment over the course of the term
  • Manage communication module course content on Quercus
  • Meeting with instructors to plan course and fit into technical content, and develop course schedule and Quercus page
  • Consulting with students (individually and in groups) to help them develop as writers and presenters
  • Having the ability to convert to online duties if required
