Job Description
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) invites applications and nominations for the position of Mental Health Wellness Officer. This position is a grant funded, full-time, non-tenured, administrative position that reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and is funded through September 29, 2023. The position may be located in Reno or Las Vegas, Nevada.
The NSHE is comprised of eight institutions: two universities, a state college, four community colleges and a research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada continues to experience growth with significant opportunities in serving over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees.
The Mental Health Wellness Officer will work with the NSHE Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) to conduct a system-wide needs assessment of the mental health and emotional wellbeing of its students, faculty, and staff. The Mental Health Wellness Officer will also work with system and institutional leadership to identify, coordinate, and provide mental health first aid, or comparable or equivalent, training, suicide awareness and prevention training, and professional development opportunities to faculty, staff, and students across the system.
SALARY GRADE: D ($120,000 to $130,000 commensurate with education and experience.) Benefits package includes health, dental, vision, life, and retirement benefits.
APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE: December 1, 2022
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with five (5) years of experience directly applicable to the position; candidates must have direct experience working with mental health-related projects and programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is recommended that applicants for this position address each of the following items in the letter of application:
Knowledge and experience working with community mental health agencies and organizations.
Knowledge of substance abuse, mental health, and recovery issues and principles.
Familiarity with state and local mental health and wellbeing delivery systems and services.
Familiarity with survey assessments, including but not limited to the deployment, implementation, analysis, and reporting of survey results.
A strong understanding of national and local mental health and wellbeing trends both within and outside of higher education.
Cultural competency and a working understanding of how to provide culturally responsive and culturally informed services.
Effective interpersonal communication with diverse stakeholders (i.e., students, employers, educators, and administrators).
Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to facilitate training and workshops.
Flexible and team player.
Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships in cross-cultural settings.
Keen desire for excellence and accuracy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following areas of responsibility:
Maintain responsibility for NSHE system-wide mental health needs assessment planning, implementing, monitoring, and reporting activities.
Respond to inquiries from all NSHE stakeholders.
Identify effective mental health first aid and suicide awareness and prevention learning and professional development opportunities offered by subject matter experts relevant to higher education.
Collaborate with the NSHE Mental Health Task Force and system administration and institutional leadership to coordinate and offer mental health first aid and suicide awareness and prevention trainings to NSHE’s faculty, staff, and students.
Ensure compliance with all grant reporting requirements and obligations.
Design and draft internal and external memoranda, written reports, and other products as relevant to the mental health needs assessment and system-wide training programs.
Keep supervisor informed of day-to-day activities, significant events or conditions impacting on participants and/or staff well-being, team safety, and office operations.
Other duties as assigned.
