MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to join DCM’s animal resource program and provide support for operation of the diagnostic lab, with an emphasis on microbiology.  DCM provides veterinary and clinical care for animals used in biomedical research at MIT and conducts NIH-funded research.  Will support the lab manager with lab operations and perform a wide range of laboratory procedures in microbiology, hematology, serum chemistry, parasitology, molecular biology, urinalysis, and serology on a variety of animal specimens.  Responsibilities include processing aerobic, anaerobic bacterial cultures, and fungal cultures; running hematology controls and keeping quality assurance records; running CBCs on Hemavet 950FS and performing manual differentials; processing parasitology fecal samples by nitrate flotation, formalin ethyl acetate concentration, Baermann, and direct exam; reviewing anal tapes and skin scrapings for parasites; preparing blood samples for chemistry tests; processing Helicobacter sp. and Campylobacter sp. cultures; performing serology and reporting results; PCR extractions and amplification reaction of MLNs for MPV; performing urinalysis and fluid analysis; participating in College of American Pathologists surveys in microbiology, parasitology, and hematology; maintaining and distributing records on laboratory specimens; monitoring incubator and refrigerator temperatures for QC purposes; preparing and autoclaving labware; performing routine laboratory clean-up/maintenance; training and guiding students/postdocs on projects, laboratory procedures, and equipment use; shipping items; maintaining inventory and ordering supplies; reporting on NHP exposure incidents; and performing a variety of other duties.  


Job Requirements
REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in a related field, one year of laboratory experience, strong microbiology skills, interpersonal skills, flexibility, willingness to learn new techniques, ability to work with minimal supervision, and oral and written English proficiency. PREFERRED:  ASCP certification and/or veterinary diagnostic experience.  Job #22034-6
