Department Summary The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. Located within HPS, the Department of Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology (ASLP) provides the finest graduate professional education in both speech-language pathology and audiology while maintaining an excellent undergraduate degree. The program stresses excellence in teaching, research, and service by its faculty and students. As a component of the educational program, the department operates the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, which offers professional services to members of our campus community and the general public for the purpose of providing clinical training for students. The Center offers state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and hearing disorders.
ASLP is seeking a Medical Coding & Billing Specialist to join the HPSfamily.
Position Overview The Medical Coding & Billing Specialist is responsible for managing client charges and payments for services rendered by the UNT Speech and Hearing Center or through one of its clinical service agreements. This position manages private-pay and third-party payments on client accounts and contract services, insurance credentialing for billing, and regular reporting to clinic directors on clinic revenues and expenses. The Medical Coding & Billing Specialist also provides backup support to the reception desk on a infrequent, as needed basis. The Medical Coding & Billing Specialist works collaboratively with the Front Desk Coordinator and Administrative Assistant to maintain efficient clinic operations.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED equivalent and three years of general office or clerical experience. Substitution of education for experience allowed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to problem-solve and make decisions.
• Skill in recording and compiling material for reports.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
• Experience with filing medical insurance claims, working denials, and posting insurance payments.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology, CPT, ICD10CM and HCPCS coding.
• Ability to professionally handle clients in stressful situations with empathy and composure.

Preferred Qualifications Experience with Medicare/Medicaid processing

Job Duties

o Obtains detailed patient information for billing and explains benefit and billing information to clients and other clinic staff in a clear, concise, and accurate manner utilizing excellent customer service
o Accurately calculates and collects copays, deductibles, and co-insurance payments, sending accurate bills sent to patients and ensuring accurate payments can be collected by front desk reception
o Files third-party claims in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate timely collection of accounts receivable
o Manages accounts receivables, including posting payments received in an accurate and timely manner and providing a monthly report of delinquencies to clinic directors as well as compiling a list of recommended write-offs bi-annually
o Analyzes and provides reports on clinic revenues and expenses from the practice management, budget, or other electronic systems upon request or as regularly scheduled by clinic directors, making recommendations for maximizing revenues from fee-for-service and third-party payers as appropriate
o Demonstrates excellent understanding of third-party reimbursement and completes all credentialing and verification processes for the UNT Speech and Hearing Center to maintain eligibility to bill insurance, including managing billing requirements of third-party contracts and minimizing rejected claims
o Maintains up-to-date knowledge of billing regulations and, in coordination with the clinic directors, assures compliance with all state and federal billing rules
o Maintains up-to-date knowledge of reception counter operations to assist as secondary backup when no other staff are available
o Works collaboratively with the Front Desk Coordinator and Administrative Assistant to maintain efficient clinic operations
o Performs other duties as assigned
