Summary
This Medical Assistant I position is in the Occupational Health Program clinic. The Medical Assistant should be comfortable using video conferencing, e-mail and phone applications. Duties will include collecting patient/employee information, responding to clinic requests and scheduling. The Medical Assistant works as part of the clinic team to ensure prompt and appropriate care is provided to our patient population. This position is outpatient only, but does provide services on different parts of the campus at times.
This position provides health services to employees and students of BCM. Experience and comfort with this population is helpful. The work is supported with a medical database and good IT skills are needed. The position entails understanding the different work environments across campus to help provide appropriate health services at the time of service.
Job Duties
- Reviews and validates vaccine records.
- Administers vaccines.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of employee records, accident reports.
- Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, venipuncture (blood draws), collect specimens, EKGs/ECGs, and POCTs.
- Conducts patient outreach phone calls and e-mails.
- Collects patient history, performs medication reconciliation and enters information in the electronic medical record.
- Notes the primary complaint/reason for patient’s visit.
- Sets up instruments and equipment for Physician.
- Administers medication under direction / order of a supervising Physician.
- Instructs Patients on general care and medical procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NAHP, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, or NRMA). New employees who are not currently certified, must obtain certification within six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with vaccinations and TB testing (preferred).

Physical Risks: Potential exposures to blood borne pathogens (blood &/or other potentially infectious materials), drugs, chemicals, radiation, and physical hazards found in patient clinics, hospitals and/or laboratory work environments and in working directly with patients and other employees. Initial Blood borne Pathogens Training is required, and a Blood borne Pathogens Refresher Training must be taken annually.
