Media & Advocacy Officer

Position description

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is seeking a Media & Advocacy Officer for an exciting role at a high-profile 70-year-old news organization reporting accurate news and information in 27 languages and 23 countries where a free press is either banned or restricted.

Are you an experienced, smart, self-starting, and resourceful media and advocacy professional with direct experience supporting press engagement and advocacy efforts looking for a challenging yet rewarding opportunity? The Media & Advocacy Officer we’re looking for will join our communications team in Washington, DC, reporting to the Communications Director and Advocacy Manager.

This role offers the chance to generate and respond to media requests to educate and inform audiences about the organization’s unique mission. If you’re also ready to take on a pivotal role in supporting advocacy campaigns and activities aimed at helping RFE/RL journalists and journalism under threat, including reporters who are currently wrongfully imprisoned, and media freedom more broadly, we want to hear from you.

What you’ll accomplish:

  • Develop working relationships with US and international media interested in RFE/RL’s work.
  • Draft, distribute and post online press releases and other materials.
  • Collaborate effectively on digital media, including website and social media
  • Support outreach to advocacy partners.
  • Draft and update advocacy materials on RFE/RL’s journalists in trouble and other media freedom issues, including the monthly “Journalists in Trouble Newsletter” coordinating closely with the External Affairs team and senior staff within RFE/RL.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, a related field, or the equivalent in experience.
  • Previous experience with media relations at think tank, NGO the legislative or executive branches of government, a public affairs agency, political campaign or trade association—2-3 years as a minimum.
  • Proven experience handling press inquiries.
  • Excellent communication, writing editing and verbal skills with high attention to detail, and ability to interact professionally with diverse partners.
  • Strong organizational skills including timeliness and accuracy with ability to deliver on deadline while working under pressure.
  • Knowledge of foreign affairs with ability to communicate effectively about foreign policy issues.
  • Familiarity with Washington DC political, think-tank and media environments.
  • Proficiency with website and social media management and promotion.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • English at the level of a first language or mother tongue.
  • Commitment to RFE/RL’s mission and media freedom.
